The Middle School Career Investigations Instructor provides students with early exposure to career pathways, workplace readiness skills, and postsecondary planning. This position supports students in exploring their interests, strengths, and goals through engaging, standards-based instruction aligned with Virginia’s Career Investigations curriculum. The instructor fosters a classroom environment that promotes career awareness, self-discovery, and lifelong learning while helping students make informed decisions about high school course selections and future opportunities. This role also involves collaboration with school counselors, CTE staff, and community partners to enhance the relevance and impact of career exploration activities.
Essential Functions
Plans and implements standards-based lessons that introduce students to a wide range of career clusters and postsecondary options
Incorporates project-based learning, career assessments, and real-world applications to foster exploration and critical thinking
Guides students in identifying personal interests, strengths, and potential career pathways
Introduces tools such as career inventories, digital portfolios, and goal-setting activities
Teaches essential soft skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving
Provides students with opportunities to practice these skills through classroom projects and simulations
Educates students about high school course planning, dual enrollment, industry certifications, and CTE pathways
Connects students with information about local industries, college options, apprenticeships, and military service
Works with counselors, CTE staff, and community members to coordinate guest speakers, career days, and field experiences
Maintains relationships with business and industry partners to enhance program relevance
Utilizes Xello, SCPS’s chosen career exploration platform, to support individualized student exploration
Incorporates multimedia and technology tools to support 21st-century skill development
Tracks student progress and maintains required documentation for student portfolios, career plans, and instructional data
Assess learning through formative and summative measures aligned to course competencies
Builds relationships with students to support social-emotional development and college/career confidence
Creates a classroom culture that promotes curiosity, respect, and self-discovery
Remains informed about current labor market trends, educational technology, and instructional best practices
Engages in ongoing professional growth to improve program effectiveness and student outcomes
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university
Currently possesses a Technical Professional, Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional license
Acceptable rating of prior teaching experience, as applicable
Employment Terms
Employment may be offered as a 10-Month (200 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. This position is evaluated annually.
