Primary Purpose:
Technologist Trainee is a training position, preparing the employee to work independently as a limit license scientist (Technologist) and to further gain ASCP certification within five years. Works under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Certified Technologist, or Technologist in providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory services area.

Essential Functions
Perform waived and automated analytic processes, including qualitative, semi‑qualitative, or quantitative tests performed automatically by an instrument.
Oversee calibration on self‑calibrating instruments and perform selected calibration processes.
Execute moderate and high‑complexity analytic processes (both automated and non‑automated).
Operate selected laboratory instruments, ensuring proper functioning; perform minor troubleshooting and routine maintenance under direction of a Technologist and/or Technical Supervisor. Maintain related records and documentation.
Document quality control and equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters.
Accurately log in and process specimens according to established departmental procedures.
Follow appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport procedures; resolve sample handling problems or refer them to designated personnel.
Process and transcribe data in the laboratory computer system. All results are validated by qualified personnel.
Train on new procedures to a prescribed level of competency.
Meet output measures defined by group procedures; assist others in defined competency areas when workload is complete.
Refer requests for special and unusual tests to the Technical Supervisor and/or Group Manager.
Assist in data collection for QA indicators as defined.
Assist in the validation of equipment and test methods as defined.
Assist in the creation and review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) as defined.
Perform internal and external proficiency testing as defined.
Maintain appropriate stock of reagents and supplies.
Assist in training of Technicians as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Physical and Other Requirements
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: Occasionally move between work sites and inside office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment requiring use of personal protective equipment per CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.
ARUP Policies and Procedures: Conduct duties in compliance with all ARUP policies and procedures.
Sedentary Work: Exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers.
Vision: Close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform various tasks.
Color Vision: Ability to distinguish colors.
Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.
Education Qualifications
Technologist Trainees at ARUP must have a Bachelor’s degree in the chemical or biological sciences with the following course requirements:
23 semester credit hours of science courses
3 semester credit hours of physics, math, or statistics
16 semester credit hours in chemistry
Eligible fields may include Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology, Hematology, and Microbiology. Specific course requirements for each field are as follows:
Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology : 23 semester credit hours of science courses, 3 semester credit hours of physics, math, or statistics, 16 semester credit hours in biological or chemical science.
Hematology : 23 semester credit hours of science courses, 3 semester credit hours of physics, math, or statistics, 16 semester credit hours in biological science.
Microbiology : 23 semester credit hours of science courses, 3 semester credit hours of physics, math, or statistics, 16 semester credit hours in biological science.
Certain specific courses may also be required:
Chemistry: Quantitative Analysis/Analytical Chemistry and Clinical Chemistry or Biochemistry.
Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology: Genetics.
Microbiology: Medical, Clinical, or Pathogenic Microbiology.
Hematology: Hematology.
Immunohematology: Immunology.
This position requires an evaluation of education and credentials, including college/university transcripts, degrees conferred, and any relevant certifications. Upon request, submit all required documents. Applications will be accepted from candidates scheduled to graduate at the end of the current academic term.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related field.
Must work for one year under the direction of a laboratory technologist after hire.
One or more years of clinical laboratory diagnostic testing experience appropriate to the section is preferred.
