Job Description
TITLE:
HS Head Girls Basketball Coach
JOB GOAL:
Responsible for all levels and all phases of the sport. The head coach is responsible for ensuring duties are completed correctly and on schedule.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) to ensure activities are conducted in a safe environment.
Maintain records to comply with district, athletic conference, state, and KSHSAA requirements, including forms, schedules, inventory, statistics, roster, etc.
Verify all candidates have completed required pre‑participation physical exam, concussion form, insurance waiver, medical release, and participation agreement forms before allowing equipment use or practice.
Ensure transfer students meet KSHSAA eligibility requirements prior to participation and that all participating students have purchased the required activity ticket.
Implement practice schedules and other schedules (facility usage, staff assignments, etc.) and submit them to administration and office staff to ensure efficient program operation.
Supervise practice sessions and maintain security of the locker room.
Report all injuries of participants to appropriate school officials following injury reporting policy.
Support and comply with athletic trainers’ recommendations for student safety, injury and participation.
Follow established decisions and policy decisions that are in keeping with the school and USD 500 policies.
Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain accurate inventory, and enforce care rules so all students are accountable at season’s end.
Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance of student athletes.
Maintain records of evaluation procedures used in the selection process and assess student athletes for feedback or team placement.
Conduct and attend various supporting activities for the assigned sport (league meetings, pre/post season coach meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets, etc.).
Develop team and individual practice regimes for student athletes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention, etc.).
Evaluate facility and/or playing field for hazards and recommend modifications to reduce injury risk.
Oversee coaching personnel and student managers to provide direction and monitor activities.
Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, organization of practices, supervision guidelines, and responsibilities.
Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare written evaluations for each coach at season’s end.
Advise coaching personnel, parents, and athletes on expectations of good sportsmanship and importance of KSHSAA Rule 52.
Monitor student athlete academic eligibility to comply with KSHSAA and USD 500 policy, providing intervention (counseling, tutoring) as needed.
Report all team scores to appropriate media outlets and prepare public information releases as high school only.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certified teacher or qualification for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
Successful completion of a criminal background check.
Current certification in CPR and AED.
COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION:
Maintains communication with school personnel, parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action to meet educational needs of students.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, curriculum, and protocols; present information and respond to questions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk or hear; specific vision abilities required include close, distance vision and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Noise level usually loud but acceptable; responsible for students’ safety, work output and well‑being. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; plan and implement lessons; establish effective relationships with students, peers, parents, community; communicate clearly in written or oral form.
