Job Description
Special Education Teacher – Jr. High. Responsible for providing a total approach to remediate, rehabilitate, and develop students with handicaps through instruction in educational subjects, physical and motor activities, speech and language development, and social skills, enabling each child to take his place in school and life.

Qualifications

Certification as set forth in Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel (Bulletin 746)

Reports to: School Principal

Supervises: Teacher Aide

Term: Nine Months

Experience and skill in preparing and implementing IEPs, annual updates, and progress reports.

Performance Responsibilities

Instructional Responsibilities

Familiarize with education guides, materials, students’ IEPs and lesson plans prior to the school year.

Prepare and provide each child’s IEP and anticipated weekly plans to the principal or designated person.

Develop instructional periods for each child as indicated in the IEP.

Teach required skills per the Individual Evaluation and IEP, working to remediate deficits.

Update each child’s IEP annually in accordance with IDEA and Louisiana Act 754.

Review short‑term objectives and submit reports to parents every six weeks.

Maintain individual files of each student’s work and test results.

Management

Create and maintain a conducive learning environment with appropriate bulletin boards, seating, ventilation, and illumination.

Develop reasonable rules for school property and equipment; perform periodic inspections and inventories.

Utilize curriculum materials, equipment, and facilities frequently in the teaching process.

Maintain student discipline and safety in adherence to state and local regulations.

Supervise timely as required by the principal.

Keep accurate attendance, financial, and other records; submit to the special education department and parents.

Report to the school before the first full day for classroom orientation.

Maintain current records, submit required reports, IEPs and evaluations to the J. B. Lafargue Special Education Center.

Professional

Attend in‑service workshops as mandated.

Participate in self‑development activities, professional organizations, conferences, etc.

Share ideas and materials with other staff.

Collaborate with staff, administrators, and IEP committees.

Keep abreast of new trends, techniques, and teaching strategies (post‑graduate work encouraged).

Public Relations

Meet with parents, students, and staff; conduct IEP committee meetings.

Participate in at least one school‑sponsored activity annually.

Uplift the image of public education regularly.

Additional duties

Establish and execute a professional growth and self‑evaluation plan.

Work effectively with school personnel.

Demonstrate self‑direction and professional ethics.

Maintain open communication with staff and the community.

Follow state, school board, and school policies.

Teach in accordance with Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching.

Perform all other delegated duties within the scope of teaching and learning during contracted hours.

Duty Summary

Instruction: Lesson planning, instruction, grading, and attendance.

Collaboration: Work with colleagues and departments.

Supervision: Students on campus and at related events.

Administrative: Meetings, training sessions, IEP meetings, parent‑teacher conferences, open‑house events, and committee work.
