Program Safety Officer (Operations Specialist 3/4)

What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Operations Specialist 3 or Operations Specialist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency assigned to produce WR detonators for the nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL’s Weapons Production Directorate and comprises a team of highly skilled technical and operational staff working in an integrated format.

The Safety Officer will provide safety leadership to a division of about 200 employees, ensuring timely and successful mission deliverables for the nation’s stockpile. The safety officer will administer, implement, and resolve performance, compliance, administrative, and technical programs, and address safety issues in direct support of operations functions.

Operations Specialist 3
Salary: $87,800–$143,000.

Uphold Laboratory SMPs (Safety Management Programs).

Implement new safety directives.

Contribute to daily safety activities: hazards analysis, procedure reviews, operational walk‑downs, programmatic maintenance, issues‑management actions.

Coach and mentor early‑career personnel on work‑execution topics.

Contribute to the DP Division WESST (Worker, Environmental, Safety, and Security Team).

Operations Specialist 4
Salary: $106,400–$176,000.

All responsibilities of Operations Specialist 3, plus additional duties.

Ensure a compliant process for hosting contractors performing on‑site maintenance of programmatic equipment.

Apply hazardous‑operations background in explosives safety (DOE‑STD‑1212) and chemical safety.

Serve as the point of contact for the Division’s life safety systems and emergency‑response readiness.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements

Conduct of Operations:

Experience working within a formal Conduct of Operations framework (DOE or equivalent).

Facility & Manufacturing Operations:

Knowledge of and experience with working in a nuclear facility; advanced understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock‑out/tag‑out policies.

Lockout/Tagout:

Experience with Lock‑Out‑Tag‑Out program’s purpose and processes.

Leadership:

Demonstrated ability to contribute to new process improvements, conduct research, develop alternative solutions, and work independently.

Transient Combustibles:

Familiarity with transient combustible program’s purpose and processes; experience inspecting, supervising, or coordinating construction and maintenance projects.

Communication:

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; knowledge of preparing and presenting operations reports.

Safety:

Knowledge of mitigating work hazards, implementing safety practices, and understanding operating configuration. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Clearance:

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for Operations Specialist 4

Customer Service:

Organizational skills and ability to interact with all levels of personnel internal and external to the laboratory.

Presenting Reports:

Expertise in preparing and presenting operations reports; collecting and organizing data and maintaining auditable records.

Work Ethic:

Ability to self‑supervise and work under consultative direction toward predetermined long‑range targets.

Education & Experience

Operations Specialist 3: Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of related experience (or equivalent). Post‑graduate coursework may be desirable.

Operations Specialist 4: Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years of related experience (or equivalent). Post‑graduate coursework may be expected.

Desired Qualifications

Operational background in hazardous operations such as explosives safety (DOE‑STD‑1212) and chemical safety.

Familiarity and/or experience with DOE National Security Enterprise sites and business practices.

Active DOE Q clearance.
