Job Title
Portable Load Limit Inspector
Job Overview
Protect life and property, promote traffic safety, and provide public safety services with respect, compassion, and unbiased professionalism.
Responsibilities
Set up and operate portable or stationary platform scales at rotating sites or weigh stations to check the weight of commercial vehicles for compliance with state weight limits.
Weigh and inspect self‑propelled construction equipment, commercial vehicles, and loads relative to legal limitations and special hauling permit limits using a height stick and portable or stationary scales.
Utilize a state‑owned portable scale vehicle to transport scales.
Answer inquiries from the general public regarding information and directions.
Appear in court as a witness regarding overload citations, if required.
Qualifications
Formal education or equivalent experience that includes reading, writing, and speaking English and proficiency in arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Position Specific Minimum Qualifications: Valid driver’s license required.
Background Check
A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required on all selected applicants.
A comparative analysis and/or drug test may be a requirement of the hiring process.
Supplemental Information
Training and development required to remain in the classification after employment includes renewal of driver license as required by law.
Unusual Working Conditions
May be exposed to vehicles leaking hazardous materials, on fire, and animal wastes.
May work outside and be exposed to weather, traffic noise, gasoline fumes.
Requires travel when operating portable scales; may be required to work evenings and crawl under vehicles.
May be exposed to moving traffic while placing signs and cones to designate selected weigh sites and during inspections.
May be exposed to unsecured loads during inspections.
