Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES anticipates the need for a Fire Science Instructor for the 2026-2027 school year. The ideal candidate will bring real-world firefighting experience into the classroom, engage students through hands‑on and experiential learning, and prepare them for careers in fire service and emergency response.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach a two‑year Fire Science and Emergency Management program aligned with New York State learning standards.
Develop and implement lesson plans that integrate theory, practical skills, and real‑world applications.
Provide instruction in areas such as fire behavior, fire prevention, emergency response, incident command, and public safety.
Incorporate hands‑on training, simulations, and scenario‑based learning experiences.
Maintain a safe and organized learning environment, including adherence to all safety protocols and procedures.
Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress and program expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a firefighter.
Completion of Firefighter I certification.
Completion of OSHA certification.
Completion of Basic Interior Firefighting training.
Willingness and eligibility to obtain New York State Teaching Certification in Emergency and Fire Sciences (7–12).
CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED
Must have a positive, can‑do attitude. Able to develop rigorous and relevant lessons in Fire Science for a wide range of students with varying levels of cognitive abilities and collaborate with other Tech Center teachers. Prior teaching experience preferred. Passion for teaching and mentoring students entering the skilled trades. Patience, flexibility, and a student‑centered mindset. Commitment to equity and access in Career and Technical Education. Willingness to stay current with evolving industry trends and technologies. Team oriented and eager to collaborate across programs.
