
Port Heavy Equipment Mechanic

The Port Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing heavy-duty equipment critical to daily port and terminal operations. This role ensures the reliability of machinery used in cargo handling and vessel support, minimizing downtime and keeping port operations running safely and efficiently in a high-demand environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on heavy port equipment, including cranes, forklifts, reach stackers, terminal trucks and diesel engines
Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic system failures
Conduct routine inspections to ensure equipment is safe, operational, and compliant
Respond to breakdowns quickly to minimize disruption to cargo and vessel operations
Repair and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, and hydraulic components
Utilize diagnostic tools and software to identify and resolve equipment issues
Perform disassembly and reassembly of major components using proper rigging and shop equipment
Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete work orders in CMMS systems
Ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA and port safety standards
Support continuous operation of port equipment by coordinating repairs with operations teams
Requirements:
Minimum 4 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic in port, marine, or industrial environments
Willingness to work a rotation of day shifts and night shifts with extra pay for night and weekends (overtime)
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy machinery diagnostics
TWIC Card or the eligibility to obtain one
Experience working on port equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and container handling machinery
Proficiency with diagnostic tools and maintenance software systems
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams
Welding and fabrication experience preferred
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate heavy equipment
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in fast-paced environments
Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and safe equipment handling practices
Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and respond to operational demands and overtime
