The Phlebotomist 1
draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre‑analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Must have excellent customer service skills.
Compliance/Safety
Appropriate PPE is worn during sample collection and processing to ensure safe work habits and maintain a safe environment for self, co‑workers, patients and visitors 100% of the time.
Confidential information is communicated in designated areas and shared on an as‑needed basis, without complaint.
Productivity
Specimens are received and accepted into the Lab Information System using proper patient identification at all times.
Laboratory centrifuge for specimen processing is operated in accordance with specified guidelines at all times.
Clinical specimen and order processing functions are performed within specified guidelines at all times.
Procedures for aseptic collection of samples for blood culture are followed with less than 3% contamination rate.
Phlebotomy areas are maintained in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times.
Positive patient identification and specimen labeling is followed at all times with less than 2 incidents a year.
All specimen collection devices and techniques are properly utilized at all times, as evidenced by less than 2 incidents per year.
Other duties as assigned
Active participation in committees, departmental processes, and special projects as assigned.
Other duties as assigned are completed.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Phlebotomy, MLA, or MA certification or license obtained within three (3) months of employment; Certified Phlebotomist or La. Medical Laboratory Assistant license
Good interpersonal/human relations skills; Good oral/written communication skills; Good teamwork skills; Good critical thinking/decision making skills; Good organizational skills

The Phlebotomist 2
draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre‑analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Must have excellent customer service skills and frequently works independently outside the main lab. May direct or lead the work of others.
