Job Description
Responsible for performing and supervising diversified work of the Water/Wastewater Maintenance operations to include repairs and installation of sewer mains, water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, meters, and lift station maintenance, etc.
Organizational Relationships
Reports To: Water/Wastewater Maintenance Manager
Directs: Directs and oversees the work of Maintenance Workers and Heavy Equipment Operators. May assume the duties and responsibilities of the Water/Wastewater Maintenance Manager in their absence.
Other: Works collaboratively with departmental staff, other City departments, and the general public.
Examples of Work
Performs all duties directly, and may review work in the absence of the Water/Wastewater Maintenance Manager;
Recommends disciplinary action;
Assigns daily work activities to crew members;
Oversees and assists with water and sewer taps to commercial and residential customers;
Operates all vehicles and equipment associated with the Water/Wastewater Maintenance department;
Oversees and assists with repairs to City water and sewer lines;
Oversees and assists with the installation of new water and sewer lines according to City construction plans;
Oversees and assists with the routine maintenance and repairs to lift stations;
Provides input on employee evaluations;
Performs the duties of on call as required;
Maintains water and wastewater facilities and performs preventive maintenance;
Trains Maintenance Workers and Heavy Equipment Operators in the fundamentals of Water/Wastewater Maintenance education as well as attends training sessions both in house and out of house;
Oversees and assists in maintaining vehicles and equipment;
Observes all safety rules and procedures as well as ensuring that the crew members do the same;
May perform Supervisor duties in the Superintendent's absence;
May build and install forms and pour concrete;
Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: Water/Wastewater Maintenance Department operations.
Demonstrated Ability to: lift and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 92 lbs.; enter and exit 24-inch diameter manhole openings without difficulty; enter and exit 24-inch wide ditch, maneuver equipment; perform strenuous work outdoors in adverse weather; safely operate all equipment.
Demonstrated Mental Ability to: tolerate working in confined places for prolonged periods.
Ability to: understand and follow oral and some written instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other employees and the public; supervise and motivate employees; maintain required certifications; hold a Texas driver's license with good driving record; be able to report for emergency duty within 30 minutes of residence.
Other: may handle toxic and/or hazardous materials or work in areas where such materials may be stored.
Acceptable Experience and Training
High school diploma or GED, and five (5) years of experience in water/wastewater maintenance or a related field. One (1) year of supervisory experience overseeing two or more personnel is preferred. Or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Collection Level III and Class "C" Distribution licenses from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license with air brakes.
