Lead estimator job at CMTA, Inc., Windsor, CO.

Why you will enjoy this opportunity
As an Estimator, you’ll turn drawings and specs into confident, competitive bids for projects across healthcare, higher‑ed, commercial, and industrial markets. You’ll own the takeoff and pricing strategy, partner with engineers and project managers, and help the team win work on time with clean, defensible estimates. If you like details, deadlines, and collaborating with smart builders, this role hits the sweet spot.

Success in the role

Produce accurate, on‑time estimates with clear assumptions, alternates, and qualifications.

Improve our hit rate and margins by managing scope, risks, and vendor/sub coverage.

Raise team quality by standardizing takeoff methods, templates, and checklists.

What you will do day‑to‑day

Review bid documents (drawings, specs, addenda) and clarify scope, inclusions/exclusions.

Perform digital takeoffs/quantity surveys for HVAC and mechanical piping systems; build labor and material assemblies.

Develop complete estimates (plan/spec and design‑build): labor, materials, equipment, subs/vendors, indirects, and contingencies.

Prepare bid proposals and pricing breakouts; craft scope letters and RFI lists; support final review with the Chief Estimator.

Solicit, level, and select subcontractor and vendor quotes; maintain coverage and resolve scope gaps.

Identify project risks (site, logistics, schedule, QA/QC, safety, spec constraints) and propose cost/means‑and‑methods options.

Organize bid packages and deadlines, track addenda, and coordinate with PMs, engineers, detailers, and field leaders.

Maintain estimate files and backups; keep historical cost data and production rates current.

Support handoff to operations: participate in turnover meetings and assist with buy‑out as needed.

What you will bring

Experience estimating mechanical systems (HVAC, sheet metal, hydronic/steam, process/mechanical piping); prior estimating experience preferred but not required for strong builders/engineers.

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings/prints and specifications; familiarity with design‑build and plan/spec delivery.

Proficiency with computerized estimating and digital takeoff (QuickPen/Trimble AutoBid or similar) and Excel/MS Office.

Strong communication and organization: clear scope notes, clean assumptions, timely vendor/sub outreach, and on‑time deliverables.

Analytical mindset with attention to detail, able to work to fixed deadlines and juggle multiple bids.

Collaborative approach with PMs, engineers, detailers, and vendors; safety‑first orientation.

High school diploma or equivalent required; technical coursework or degree in construction/mechanical discipline a plus.
