Job Summary
The Phlebotomist plays a vital role in delivering a safe, professional, and positive patient experience. This position is responsible for performing blood draws using proper sterile technique, processing and preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and supporting laboratory operations through specimen receiving, accessioning, and accurate data entry.
This role requires strong attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced clinical environment while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Phlebotomy
Greet patients in a professional and compassionate manner while providing clear explanations of procedures.
Verify patient identity and confirm test orders to ensure accurate specimen labeling according to laboratory protocols.
Perform venipuncture using proper sterile technique and universal precautions.
Select appropriate venipuncture equipment and prepare collection sites using proper antiseptic techniques.
Monitor patient reactions during procedures and respond appropriately to anxiety, discomfort, or complications.
Provide proper post‑procedure care and ensure safe disposal of sharps and biohazard materials.
Laboratory Specimen Processing
Receive, open, and sort specimen bags for processing.
Prepare specimens for transport, testing, and analysis according to laboratory protocols.
Maintain specimen integrity and prevent cross‑contamination during processing.
Ensure specimens meet laboratory requirements prior to testing.
Data Entry & System Documentation
Utilize Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to manage patient orders and documentation.
Accurately check patients in and out of the system and release orders to the LIS.
Validate orders, print specimen labels, and document results such as PT/INR when applicable.
Enter patient demographics, inventory, and test codes accurately into the system.
Laboratory Support
Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas.
Maintain laboratory inventory and supplies as needed.
Support daily laboratory operations in a fast‑paced and detail‑oriented environment.
Maintain flexibility to support departmental scheduling and operational needs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, specimen collection, and laboratory processing requirements.
Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory testing protocols.
Understanding of HIPAA privacy and patient confidentiality regulations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide excellent patient service.
Excellent organizational, time management, and attention‑to‑detail skills.
Proficiency with computers and software systems including EHR platforms and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.
Ability to maintain professionalism, sound judgment, and patient confidentiality at all times.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a healthcare team environment.
Education & Experience
High School Diploma or GED required
American Heart Association
BLS/CPR certification required
Minimum
1 year of phlebotomy experience
required
Experience using
Electronic Health Records (EHR)
preferred
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This position operates within a healthcare clinical setting and requires frequent movement throughout the workday.
Physical requirements include:
