Job Responsibilities

Identify patients at nutritional risk by utilizing evidence‑based screening criteria and clinical judgment.

Respond promptly to nutrition consults ordered by healthcare providers or requested by patients and multidisciplinary team members.

Assess the nutritional status of inpatients and outpatients through comprehensive evaluation of medical history, lab data, dietary intake, and physical examination.

Develop and implement individualized, interdisciplinary nutrition care plans tailored to patient needs and clinical conditions.

Provide nutrition education and counseling to patients and caregivers on prescribed diets, dietary modifications, and therapeutic nutrition interventions.

Conduct follow‑up evaluations to monitor patient progress and assess the effectiveness of nutrition care plans, making adjustments as necessary.

Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals through informal communication and formal interdisciplinary care conferences.

Supervise, mentor, and evaluate dietetic interns by providing assigned learning experiences and feedback to support their professional development.

Deliver educational presentations and training sessions on nutrition‑related topics to healthcare professionals, community groups, and other stakeholders.

Collect and analyze quality improvement data related to nutrition services and participate in developing action plans to enhance care quality and patient outcomes.

Participate actively in departmental and hospital‑wide task forces, committees, and initiatives to support continuous improvement and organizational goals.

Assume additional responsibilities as assigned to support the clinical nutrition program and contribute to the overall mission of the healthcare facility.

Position Qualifications
Minimum Required

Masters Degree from an accredited dietetics program (a bachelor's degree will be accepted for those who are grandfathered in based on the guidelines set forth by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (those who graduated with their bachelor's degree in an accredited dietetics program prior to January 1, 2024)).

Successful completion of a supervised practice program for nutrition.

Must be eligible to sit for the registration examination for Dietitians.

Preferred

Previous clinical experience in an acute care teaching facility.

License/Certification
Minimum Required

Eligibility for registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Successful completion of the Registration Examination for Dietitians within 6 months of hire date.

Obtains NYS certification as a dietitian‑nutritionist (CDN) within 1 (one) year of hire or after passing the Registration Examination for dietitians.

Preferred

Registered Dietitian.

Work Environment

Work is performed both in office settings and directly on patient care units, often requiring close collaboration and proximity with other employees. The nursing units are typically busy and can involve working in confined spaces with a high level of activity.

When entering isolation rooms, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory to ensure safety for both staff and patients.
