Our offerings include professional learning and coaching for educators, specialized programming for students with diverse needs, and PreK-12 education across 16 interdistrict magnet schools. Additionally, CREC provides school construction, operations, and cooperative business services, while also delivering programs that help adults build real, job-ready skills.
The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts - Half Day, an Arts Magnet High School program managed by the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) in Hartford CT - seeks a Costume Designer/Artist Instructor. Primary responsibilities include: classroom and lab instruction for high school students in theater design and production as well as production support for Arts Academy Theater, Musical Theater, and Dance productions. The Costume Designer designs, budgets and manages the construction of costumes for Arts Academy theater productions; manages the Academy costume shop, oversees costume production over-hires, and fills in as costume shop personnel as needed (draper, stitcher, crafts, etc.). Other duties include management of student crew technical assignments for the school.
This is a full-time, ten-month, salaried position with benefits. Position starts August 2026 for the 2026-2027 school year.
QUALIFICATIONS
B.A. / B.F.A. is required with preference given to applicants with professional credentials in costume design, costume construction/crafts, hair and makeup in the professional or educational theater setting. Experience teaching and/or working with high school students is desirable. Applicants should have a current valid driver's license.
Formal State of Connecticut teaching certification is not a requirement for this position.
Eligibility for a Connecticut State Department of Education Adjunct Arts Instructor Permit is required, requirements for permit eligibility: (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education accredited by the Board of Governors of Higher Education, or regionally accredited, (2) have a minimum of three years of work experience in the arts or one year of work and two years of specialized schooling related to the applicant's artistic specialty, and (3) at least one hundred eighty hours of cumulative experience working with children in a private or public setting, including, but not limited to, afterschool programs, group lessons, children's theater, dance studio lessons, and artist-in-residence programs, or at least two years' experience as a full-time faculty member at an institution of higher education or been employed by an eligible inter-district magnet school prior to July 1, 2011 and for at least one year.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and deliver engaging lessons in costume design, costume construction, costume crafts, fashion history, etc.
Teach classes for diverse student groups, ensuring alignment with developmental and skill levels.
Incorporate innovative and culturally responsive teaching strategies into the curriculum.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that inspires creativity.
Provide constructive feedback to help students grow artistically and personally.
Encourage student participation in exhibitions, performances, or showcases.
Serve as a mentor and role model, demonstrating professionalism and artistic integrity.
Maintain accurate attendance and student progress records.
Communicate with CREC staff and parents/guardians as needed regarding student achievements or concerns.
Participate in professional development and faculty meetings.
Comply with all company policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
