Job Description
We are seeking a senior Campus Architect and Strategic Site Planner to provide institution‑level architectural and site‑planning leadership to advance the development and long‑range vision of LLNL’s built environment. In this highly collaborative role, you will integrate campus architecture, site planning, and facility siting practices, leveraging subject‑matter expertise to support the evolution and implementation of the Site Development Plan (SDP), and guide the preparation, review, and application of Findings and Determinations (F&Ds) and related siting or approval documentation. This position is within the Director’s Office.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.4 or TSS.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level. This position may offer a hybrid schedule; the specifics may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

You Will

Provide campus architectural planning leadership for a diverse set of complex projects and planning initiatives, contributing to the long‑range vision of LLNL’s built environment.

Integrate architectural, planning, and siting criteria with Laboratory objectives, standards, and applicable and regulatory requirements to develop viable campus and facility planning solutions.

Support the SDP through advanced planning analysis and studies, developing and evaluating options where approaches may be highly ambiguous and constraints may be competing.

Guide the preparation, review, and application of F&Ds and related documentation to inform campus planning and project decisions.

Advise on campus form, function and image to ensure alignment with current and future Laboratory missions, including siting, massing, adjacency, and campus experience considerations.

Collaborate with Laboratory leadership, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to translate mission requirements into campus and site design solutions and align scope, requirements, and planning assumptions.

Review, develop, and recommend campus and facility design standards, planning guidelines, and best practices to improve consistency and project outcomes.

Support the Space and Site Planning Department in strategic planning, project prioritization, and reporting to the Campus Planner/Space and Site Planning Lead.

Translate institutional and program space needs into planning requirements, adjacency concepts, test fits, and floor plans for existing and new facilities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.5 Level

Serve as a prime technical consultant on highly complex, unusual, and/or sensitive campus architecture and site planning issues where solution paths are not known in advance.

Champion the development and adoption of innovative architectural and planning concepts, methodologies, and best practices that influence Laboratory‑wide infrastructure strategies and long‑range targets.

Serve as a recognized subject matter expert, providing authoritative technical guidance and strategic recommendations to senior management and external stakeholders on campus architecture, site planning and long‑range infrastructure development.

Influence and shape Laboratory‑wide architectural and planning standards, review processes, and governance practices to ensure consistency, sustainability, and alignment with future mission requirements.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and significant relevant experience.

Licensed Architect in California, or the ability to obtain licensure within 12 months of hire.

Highly advanced knowledge and applied experience in architectural design, campus planning, and site development, including integration with infrastructure systems and siting criteria.

Demonstrated experience leading architectural or planning work on complex, multi‑disciplinary projects with evolving requirements, constraints, and stakeholder needs.

Demonstrated ability to develop planning options, evaluate alternatives, and recommend solutions using sound technical judgment within broadly defined objectives.

Expert verbal and written communication skills to present and explain technical information, brief leadership, and provide planning guidance to diverse stakeholders.

Demonstrated success collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and influencing decisions across organizational boundaries.

Experience preparing, reviewing, and supporting F&Ds, siting approval documents, or comparable institutional planning approvals for complex projects and/or programs.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.5 Level

Recognized subject matter expertise demonstrated through sustained impact on enterprise‑scale planning or infrastructure outcomes.

Demonstrated ability to influence strategic technical decisions across organizational boundaries, including standards, governance, and long‑range planning direction.

Extensive track record of developing innovative approaches to resolve highly complex, unusual and/or sensitive planning challenges with substantial institutional impact.

Qualifications We Desire

Proficiency with planning and design technology platforms such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), GIS, and/or parametric design platforms.

Working knowledge of applicable building codes, land use regulations and planning standards, including the California Building Code, ADA, fire/life safety, and Department of Energy facility requirements.

Professional certifications relevant to architecture and/or campus and site planning (licensed architect in additional jurisdictions, AIA, NCARB or similar credentials).

Pay Range

$185,850 - $235,692 Annually for the TSS.4 level

$223,050 - $282,828 Annually for the TSS.5 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Position Information
This is a Career Indefinite position, open to Lab employees and external candidates.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q‑level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. All L or Q‑cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q‑level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
