Schedule is typically Monday – Friday 8am – 4:30pm and will vary on weeks with weekend MOD rotation assignment. (example – MOD assignment weeks may include a schedule of Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday rather than Monday – Friday). MOD assignment is required. Any schedule is subject to change based on business needs.
Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Nursing job entails ensuring excellent quality care, great customer service, timely interventions and treatments, providing for patient comfort, safety and personal care by direct care staff. The position provides coverage for other assignments including but not limited to RN, LVN, CNA duties, desk nurse, administrative duties, treatment nurse, etc. as needed for staffing coverage. The ADON is a direct support to the Director of Nursing and in the absence of the DON has direct oversight of the nursing responsibilities and requirements. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of the Organization. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support the Organization’s strategic plan and the goals. The Assistant Director of Nursing has a direct reporting responsibility to the Director of Nursing and SNF Administrator.
Essential Functions
Assure excellent quality care and customer service at all times from all staff.
Provide direct support for the Director of Nursing including but not limited to assuring proper staffing, covering shifts during staffing needs (working a cart or desk if needed), ensuring Unit Managers and other direct reports process required documentation timely and accurately for both staff and residents/families, holding staff accountable based on policy and procedure with HR intervention, assuring HER and all other resident records are audit/survey ready at all times, etc.
Ensure the Skilled Nursing Facility is prepared and successfully passes surveys, audits and reviews on‑going by creating internal systems to reduce risk, liability and deficiencies in all areas.
Plan, deliver and execute quality Nursing Care at all times.
Associate Nursing Practice and Quality Assurance with performance.
In the absence of the DON or when directed by the DON, delegate, support and coordinate Nursing Care with RNs, LVNs, CNAs and other departmental staff providing patient care.
Be an effective teacher and leader for all staff.
Be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long‑term care.
Deal compassionately and tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agency personnel and the general public.
Display leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with all other staff, departments, residents, families and any other persons associated with O’Connor Woods.
Plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures necessary for providing quality care.
Have knowledge, success and experience with quality assurance.
Provide coverage as needed for other assignments including but not limited to RN, LVN, CNA, desk nurse, administrative duties, treatment nurse, assisting with audits and training staff.
Maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
Maintain business/professional boundaries with all staff, management and outside vendors.
Comply with company policy.
Respond to all verbal and written communication within 24 hours of receipt.
Attend and participate in Department meetings.
Assist with special projects as needed.
Ensure the safety, health and welfare of staff and residents at all times.
Provide encouragement, guidance and resources to staff and residents when needed.
Act as a positive role model and mentor for staff.
Adhere to company policies and Corporate Compliance and Ethics Program Code of Conduct.
Perform other duties as assigned from direct supervisor and/or department Director.
Minimum Qualifications
Current California RN licensure (to be maintained as active and in good standing during employment).
Current CPR/1st Aid (to be maintained as active and in good standing during employment).
Prior Director level management of 1 year minimum REQUIRED (preferably in a Skilled Nursing Facility) including documented management of employees/direct reports.
Thorough documentation skills including grammatical, spelling and organization.
Must meet requirements to be an eligible driver if required to operate a company vehicle, including a current State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years.
Ability to read, write and communicate to residents, staff, families, vendors and all business relationships in English.
Ability to pass a criminal background clearance check, drug screen, physical and TB test.
Able to work in excess of 40 hours per week (upon Dept. Director approval) with the possibility of a varied schedule.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
Ability to communicate with all levels of staff in an effective, neutral and professional manner.
Ability to function as a member of the team in a multi‑task environment.
Flexibility to handle multiple priorities, with the ability to adjust to high pressure and changing business conditions.
Proficiency in the use of computers and associated software.
