Job Description
Primary Purpose
The Elementary School Principal will direct, lead and manage the instructional program and supervise operations and personnel at the campus level. The role provides leadership to ensure high standards of academic achievement, oversees compliance with district policies and procedures, supports successful instructional programs, and manages all campus activities.
The Principal must act with integrity, support organizational goals, inspire and motivate others, utilize feedback, drive results, and champion the needs of students, employees, and the overall District.
Qualifications
Required:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
Valid Texas Principal Certification or other administrative certification
Five years of experience as a classroom teacher
Three years of successful experience in instructional leadership roles
Reading Academy Certification or currently enrolled
Preferred:
Five years of experience as a campus administrator
Special Knowledge/Skills
Thorough understanding of school operations
Ability to coordinate campus support operations
Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Ability to coordinate campus functions
Ability to interpret and apply policy, procedures, and data
Strong leadership, organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Management
Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure alignment with student needs and program outcomes, taking corrective actions as needed.
Consult campus-level committees on planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the campus education program, including students and community representatives when appropriate.
Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in achieving instructional goals.
School or Organization Morale
Foster collegiality and team building among staff, encouraging active involvement in decision‑making.
Maintain two‑way communication with the superintendent, staff, students, parents, and community, promoting high‑level performance expectations and recognizing excellence.
Ensure effective and timely resolution of conflicts.
School or Organizational Improvement
Build a common vision for school improvement with staff, directing planning activities and implementing programs to achieve the school's mission.
Identify, analyze, and apply research findings to promote school improvement.
Develop and set annual campus performance objectives aligned with District goals and strategic priorities.
Maintain and use information systems to track campus progress toward performance objectives and state accountability standards.
Personnel Management
Interview, select, and orient new staff; approve all personnel assignments to the campus.
Define performance expectations regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and public communication.
Observe, record, and evaluate employee performance, conducting evaluation conferences.
Recommend personnel actions (termination, suspension, non‑renewal) to the superintendent.
Management of Fiscal, Administrative and Facilities Functions
Comply with district, state, and federal policies and regulations.
Develop campus budgets based on documented program needs, estimated enrollments, and personnel requirements, maintaining fiscal control and reporting accurate information.
Compile and maintain required reports, records, and documents, including attendance and textbook requisition reports.
Manage school facilities and supervise maintenance to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe campus.
Student Management
Develop a discipline management system that promotes positive behavior and enhances the school climate.
Ensure uniform observation of school rules and equitable discipline, following the Student Code of Conduct and handbook.
Conduct timely, effective conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.
Professional Growth and Development
Develop professional skills and demonstrate ethical, responsible behavior, serving as a role model.
Promote staff capacity by providing aligned professional development.
School or Community Relations
Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit support for its realization.
Demonstrate awareness of community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise and evaluate campus staff, including assistant principals, teachers, counselors, librarians, instructional aides, clerical support staff, and custodians.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, and some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. The position includes travel within the district and statewide. Mental demands include problem solving, data interpretation, application of current research and theory, effective communication, and maintenance of emotional control under stress.
