Power Engineering Technologist II

Summary
This is the second level of the Distribution Engineering Technologist classification. The purpose of this position is to provide an intermediate level of experienced technical expertise to evaluate complex options and design power distribution facilities for residential and small to medium commercial and industrial projects in a safe, cost‑effective, and reliable manner. Incumbents are expected to demonstrate an intermediate to advanced level of experience with customer design workflows, procedures, and technical skills within the client’s specific areas of expertise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
With limited direct supervision and guidance, the incumbent is responsible for the following:

Interpret applicable codes, standards, regulations, requirements, and guidelines

Maintain records and files and update appropriate company and client systems

Apply client and company policies and procedures in the development of moderately difficult to complex site designs for electrical distribution facilities

Create safe and cost‑effective designs for overhead and underground distribution projects, including commercial, industrial, extra‑facility, high‑profile, highway relocation, and other projects requiring high reliability

Prepare project and job packages including material lists, requisitions, site drawings, and construction drawings that maximize safety and service reliability

Coordinate with construction personnel and client or customer representatives to resolve job‑site or design‑related issues

Create work requests using current work management tools and communicate with clients and end‑use customers regarding schedules, commitments, feasibility, timelines, and expectations

Apply client and company reliability principles to resolve power quality issues by evaluating loading on overhead and underground equipment

Develop and maintain relationships with key internal and external customers while supporting company and client business goals

Perform field work as required to validate customer and system requirements

Assist with the training and development of other employees

Learn, practice, and promote all safety policies and procedures at all times

Perform other duties as assigned by management

Complexity of Work
Moderately routine work with application of general policies and procedures. Some independent decision‑making is required.

Relationships Outside Work Group
Position may influence decisions of moderate importance and requires a high degree of tact.

Education and/or Experience
Education

Required: High school diploma or GED

Preferred: Associate degree from a two‑year college or technical school

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university in non‑engineering science, math, or business

Note: Certain client projects or contractual requirements may require an Associate or Bachelor’s degree.

Experience

1–3 years of experience in utility power distribution engineering or related craft work

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

None required

On‑the‑Job Training
Training includes job shadowing, classroom instruction, and interaction with experienced employees during the first year in the position.

Ability to read and interpret procedure manuals and operational documentation

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals

Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings to customers, clients, and employees

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals

Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and interpret spreadsheets

Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts

Reasoning Ability

Ability to interpret a variety of written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule‑based instructions

Ability to address problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations

Valid driver’s license and vehicle suitable for business use (mileage reimbursement may apply)

Ability to participate in storm restoration activities as a Driver, Wire Sitter, or Damage Assessor (DA role requires storm qualification)
