Mid-Level Machining Technician

The Mid-Level Machining Technician is a part-time, non-benefited position responsible for interpreting, planning, and executing machining operations to produce precision parts that meet customer specifications. This role involves analyzing technical drawings, developing CAM toolpaths, and administering machining processes to ensure efficient and high-quality production. The machinist will utilize CNC and manual machines, applying expertise in precision measurement and material properties to achieve exact tolerances.
Compensation: $20.06 - $22.09/hr. depending upon directly related experience.
Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled.
Starting Date: As soon as practical after the hiring process.
Principal Responsibilities and Results, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Essential Functions:
Interpret customer drawings and specifications to plan and execute machining operations
Utilize CAM software to create and modify toolpaths for CNC equipment
Operate CNC and manual machines, including mills, lathes, and 3D printers
Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools to ensure parts meet specifications
Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and solve machining challenges
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace, adhering to all safety standards and protocols
Perform routine machine maintenance and report issues requiring advanced repairs
Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.
Knowledge:
Machining Fundamentals: Understanding of CNC and manual machining principles, including cutting speeds, feeds, and tooling.
Materials Science: Knowledge of material properties and how they affect machining.
Blueprint Reading: Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and GD&T symbols.
CAM Software: Familiarity with programming and editing CAM toolpaths (e.g., Fusion 360, MasterCAM).
Safety Regulations: Awareness of workplace safety practices and OSHA standards.
Skills:
CNC Operation: Proficiency in setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC machines.
Precision Measurement: Skilled in using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMMs for quality checks.
Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve machining issues efficiently.
Toolpath Optimization: Competence in modifying and optimizing CAM programs for efficiency and quality.
Communication: Strong ability to communicate effectively with team members and interpret customer feedback.
Technical Documentation: Skill in maintaining accurate records of production processes, inspections, and maintenance.
Abilities:
Attention to Detail: Capability to produce high-precision parts meeting exact specifications.
Time Management: Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively.

Physical/Mental Demands:
While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required
While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in machining, including CNC operation and CAM programming.
Experience in reading and interpreting technical drawings and GD&T.
Experience with precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, dial indicators).
Experience with CAM software such as Fusion 360, MasterCAM, or similar.
Experience with various materials and their machining properties.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate degree or certification in machining, manufacturing, or a related field.
Experience with Haas machines and G-code programming.
Experience with 5-axis CNC machining operations and programming.
Experience with coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) or other advanced metrology tools for high-precision quality control.
