Utility Worker

NYCSBUS is seeking for reliable and dedicated full-time Utility Workers to support daily depot operations by maintaining the cleanliness, functionality, and safety of our facilities, vehicles, and equipment. This hands-on role is essential to ensuring uninterrupted service delivery and a safe working environment for our operations and maintenance teams.
As part of the depot operations team, the Utility Worker will assist with vehicle cleaning, shop support, groundskeeping, and general upkeep while following safety protocols and working collaboratively with team members. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in their work, values teamwork, and understands the importance of reliability in a fast-paced transportation environment.

Maintain Vehicle Cleanliness
Thoroughly clean and sanitize the interior and exterior of school buses, including sweeping, mopping, disinfecting, and removing trash.
Refill vehicle supplies such as hand sanitizer, paper towels, and safety kits.
Identify and report vehicle damage or maintenance needs to supervisors.
Support Depot Maintenance
Perform general janitorial duties in depot buildings, restrooms, breakrooms, and offices to ensure a clean and safe environment for staff.
Assist in maintaining depot grounds, including snow removal, leaf blowing, sweeping, and litter collection.
Restock supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage and supply areas.
Assist Fleet & Facilities Operations
Support mechanics by retrieving parts, cleaning shop areas, and disposing of waste materials in accordance with safety regulations.
Help prepare buses for inspection or return to service by ensuring they are clean and properly stocked.
Deliver tools, supplies, or documentation between locations as needed.
Comply with Safety & Procedures
Follow all NYCSBUS safety guidelines and OSHA regulations when handling equipment, chemicals, and waste.
Report hazards, spills, or unsafe conditions to supervisors immediately.
Participate in safety training and toolbox talks as required.
Contribute to Depot Operations
Provide flexible support to the depot team during peak periods (e.g., back to school, inclement weather) or when additional assistance is needed.
Assist other departments with light labor or errands as assigned.
Qualifications
Eligible to work in the U.S.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Bilingual language skills (Spanish, French, Haitian Creole) highly valued.
Prior experience in janitorial, custodial, maintenance, or vehicle cleaning is preferred.
Willing and able to work early mornings, late evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Must be dependable, punctual, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, squatting, and climbing steps/ladders.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions including cold, heat, rain, or snow.
Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, fumes, and moderate noise.
Must wear required PPE (personal protective equipment) at all times when on duty.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly Rate: $19.00
Comprehensive benefits including health coverage, paid vacation, paid holidays, and PTO.
