Job Overview: Under the supervision of the RN, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs various care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort and safety of a specific patient population (ANA Standards of Delegation, 2004). The employee must be able to successfully complete job specific orientation, competencies, and meet/exceed standards as identified in the criteria based performance appraisal. PCTs must demonstrate awareness of patients' rights in all aspects of patient care and report issues to the appropriate person. The PCT demonstrates leadership through coordination of unit equipment and activities. Communicates to the RN pertinent findings or observations noted while providing patient care and comfort. Assist professional staff with basic life support principles.
Unit Description:
As a Level II Trauma Center, the Surgical Trauma Cardiovascular ICU (STICU/4800) provides critical care to all general surgical, trauma, cardiothoracic, neuro surgical and general medical ICU patients. The universal concept of the 22-bed unit allows for the ability to scale the patient beds and staffing levels to meet the acuity of the patients.
STICU patient population includes adult and pediatric trauma patients who suffer life threatening or potentially life-threatening traumatic injuries. STICU also specializes in open heart recovery, AAA and carotid artery repair as well as other thoracic and vascular surgeries. Knowledgeable staff are able to perform CRRT and ECMO. All rooms are monitored and eight rooms are equipped to provide hemodialysis at bedside.
Required: Certifications/Licenses/Education:
Basic Life Support: Health Care Provider, within six months of hire.
Completion of a high school education or equivalent (GED) preferred
Successfully complete PCT classes as required by care center/unit.
