Role Overview
The Assistant Controller will play a key role in reinforcing financial discipline, reporting accuracy, and operational accounting rigor across a growing, multi-entity construction platform. This position serves as a critical extension of the senior finance leadership team, supporting close cycles, strengthening controls, and ensuring consistency in accounting practices across operating companies. The role is highly hands-on and well-suited for a technically strong accountant who thrives in dynamic, execution-focused environments.
This is a fully in-office position based in Walnut Creek.
Core Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
Coordinate and execute monthly and annual close processes across multiple entities, ensuring timely completion and accuracy.
Review and prepare journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations with a strong focus on balance sheet integrity.
Validate financial statements and supporting schedules prior to leadership review.
Construction Accounting & Job Cost Oversight
Monitor job cost activity and ensure alignment between operational data and the general ledger.
Support preparation and review of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, including over/under billing analysis.
Partner with operations to explain margin trends, cost variances, and project performance.
Accounts Payable & Receivable Governance
Provide oversight and review of AP and AR processes to ensure proper coding, cutoff, and compliance with internal controls.
Support close-related AP/AR activities, including accrual validation and subledger-to-ledger reconciliations.
Controls, Compliance & Technical Accounting
Reinforce adherence to U.S. GAAP, internal policies, and construction-specific accounting standards (including ASC 606).
Prepare documentation and schedules to support internal reviews and external audits.
Assist with sales and use tax compliance and other construction-related tax matters across jurisdictions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a financial partner to project managers, field leaders, and operations teams to promote financial transparency and accountability.
Support leadership with ad hoc analysis, special projects, and process improvement initiatives.
Process Improvement & Scalability
Identify opportunities to enhance accounting workflows, controls, and systems as the organization scales through organic growth and acquisitions.
Contribute to ERP optimization and system standardization efforts across entities.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required.
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with substantial exposure to construction or construction-adjacent environments.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with percent-complete accounting, revenue recognition, and job costing.
Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP with the ability to apply guidance in practical, real-world scenarios.
Experience supporting multi-entity and multi-state operations strongly preferred.
Prior exposure to payroll accounting and related compliance is a plus.
Technical & Systems Profile
Comfortable operating in complex accounting environments with multiple entities and ERP platforms.
Experience with construction and accounting systems such as Sage, Plexxis, QuickBooks, Procore, Textura, or similar tools preferred.
Advanced Excel skills and strong attention to detail required.
Systems consolidation or post-acquisition integration experience is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits
Base salary range approximately
$120,000–$150,000 , with flexibility for exceptional candidates.
