General Counsel
Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) is seeking a General Counsel to guide the institution's legal and compliance functions.

Overview
This position serves as the University’s chief legal and compliance officer, providing strategic legal guidance to the President, Board of Trustees, and senior leadership. The General Counsel promotes sound decision‑making and mitigates institutional risk across employment, labor relations, free expression, student matters, and regulatory challenges.
The role reports to the President and supervises the Executive Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX, as well as co‑supervision of the Administrative and Special Projects Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal counsel and strategic guidance on all legal matters relevant to a public higher education institution.
Serve as a proactive, solutions‑oriented advisor to campus leaders.
Advise Human Resources on employment law matters (Title VI, VII, IX, ADA, FLSA, FMLA) and compliance.
Oversee collective bargaining agreements and counsel on personnel actions, discipline, and grievances.
Advise the Equal Opportunity Office and provide oversight.
Conduct legal research on legislative, regulatory, and institutional matters and present findings.
Oversee enterprise risk management and compliance committee.
Participate in policy development and update administrative procedures.
Inform leadership of changes to legislation, board policy, and administrative procedures.
Create and maintain draft agreements and legal documents.
Maintain confidentiality of privileged information.
Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for diverse populations.
Represent or oversee representation in judicial and administrative proceedings and negotiations.
Build and maintain relationships with state agencies, peer institutions, and partners.
Integrate the College’s commitment to Justice, Equity and Transformation into all processes and programming.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Foster a cooperative work environment.
Provide sound legal advice on a wide range of issues.
Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
Analyze and interpret issues and prepare legal opinions.
Communicate with officials at all levels of government.
Minimum Qualifications
Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school and current license to practice in Massachusetts.
Minimum ten (10) years of progressive responsibility in higher education or public‑sector law, or equivalent.
Familiarity with employment and higher education regulations (Titles IV, VI, VII, IX, ADA, FLSA, FMLA).
Experience operating in a collective bargaining environment.
Strong legal research and analysis skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail.
Ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Proven ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.
Maintains required training, licensure and certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience with higher education or public sector law specializing in employment law and contract review.
Experience in Massachusetts.
