Position Summary
TRIO Programs at Forsyth Tech Community College hosts three federally funded TRIO Programs: Student Support Services (SSS) and two Upward Bound Programs. SSS serves 140 low‑income, first‑generation students and students with disabilities, providing opportunities for academic development, assistance with college requirements, and motivation toward successful completion of postsecondary education. The goal is to increase college retention, graduation, and 4‑year transfer rates of participants. The SSS Success Advisor provides programmatic and direct student support for the SSS program.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required in Education, Counseling, Humanities, or related field.
Note: Degrees and hours must be from a college accredited by a United States Department of Education accepted accrediting agency such as SACSCOC.
Two years of experience teaching, tutoring, or advising low‑income, first‑generation students and/or students with disabilities, preferably at the college level.
Proven ability to gain the respect of the internal and external constituent community.
Familiarity with ADA law, disability services, financial aid requirements, and college admissions.
Knowledge and/or experience working in a collegiate environment.
Strong organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience overcoming similar academic, economic and cultural obstacles.
Experience with Blumen or other database management systems.
Experience working in a community college.
Knowledge and experience specifically with TRIO or SSS services, objectives, and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist participants with course selection and registration through academic advising before each semester begins.
Facilitate academic skill‑building workshops to support persistence and success.
Develop an Individualized Educational Success Plan (IESP) for each new participant, including recommended services and timelines; share IESPs with SSS staff and update each semester.
Ensure that all students are served at least three times per semester and that their IESPs are current.
Monitor student progress through early alerts, SSS attendance, workshop participation, and staff meetings; provide timely intervention and encouragement.
Document all student contacts and services electronically and in student files, maintaining confidentiality.
Recruit student participants, review applications, conduct interviews, and manage enrollment.
Coordinate and administer Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) for new applicants as part of the intake process.
Report monthly to the Executive Director of TRIO Programs on activities, challenges, and achievements through a written document.
Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings to address program effectiveness and student needs.
Assist in preparation of the Annual Performance Report as required by U.S. Department of Education.
Plan, accompany, and supervise students on cultural enrichment trips, including overnight travel.
Attend local, state, and national meetings, conferences, and seminars, including overnight stays as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
Regular operation and use of computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
Frequent communication and accurate exchange of information with others.
Movement around office and campus to attend meetings, classes, and access files, machinery or job‑related tools.
Ability to lift and/or move equipment, tools or paperwork up to 25 pounds.
Ability to reach, stoop, kneel or crouch to adjust or collect equipment and/or supplies.
Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
