Position Overview
Under the direction of the Director of Administration and Operations, the Facilities and Maintenance Manager is responsible for all building maintenance needs and day-to-day operation and performance of building systems, for the Maya Angelou Schools and the See Forever Foundation’s main building, located at 5600 East Capitol Street NE, Washington, DC 20009. The Facilities and Maintenance Manager will also be responsible for the building maintenance needs of the organization's six residential houses, located throughout Ward 7.
In this role, the Facilities and Maintenance Manager ensures that all facilities are safe, clean, compliant, and supportive of a trauma-informed, student-centered learning environment. Serving opportunity youth and adult learners, the Facilities and Maintenance Manager plays a critical role in maintaining spaces that reflect dignity, respect, and high expectations, while overseeing building operations, preventative maintenance, safety compliance, and vendor coordination across assigned campuses. This work ensures alignment with public charter school regulations and the organization’s mission.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Facilities Operations & Maintenance
Oversee daily maintenance and operations of school buildings, including classrooms, offices, common areas, and specialized program spaces
Develop and implement a preventative maintenance plan to minimize disruptions to instruction
Perform and/or coordinate repairs related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building systems
Maintain work order systems and ensure timely resolution of requests
Monitor equipment inventory and place orders when necessary
Monitor key systems to ensure proper functionality
Safety, Compliance & Risk Maintenance
Ensure compliance with District of Columbia regulations, public charter school requirements, and applicable building codes
Support adherence to oversight expectations from entities such as the DC Public Charter School Board
Conduct routine safety inspections and address hazards immediately
Maintain documentation for fire safety, inspections, and occupancy requirements
Monitor and maintain the security cameras, fob, and Dieken systems
Install or oversee the installation of critical system upgrades
Train operations leaders on new and existing building access systems, including but not limited to security cameras, alarms, fob readers, and HVAC systems
Policies and Procedures
Work alongside the Director of Administration and Operations to implement building operational policies and procedures for mission-critical functions, such as building emergency planning and other forms of physical plant support
Supervise custodial staff and ensure high standards of cleanliness and sanitation
Oversee cleaning protocols that support student health and wellness
Manage pest control, waste disposal, and recycling programs
Ensure facilities remain welcoming, graffiti-free, and well-maintained
Manage relationships with service providers (HVAC, janitorial, security, pest control, etc.)
Obtain bids, review contracts, and oversee vendor performance
Ensure all vendors meet compliance, insurance, and safety requirements
Budget & Resource Management Facility
Develop and manage facilities and maintenance budgets
Monitor expenditures and identify cost-effective solutions
Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
3–5+ years of experience in facilities, maintenance, or building operations
Experience working in schools, nonprofits, or other public-serving institutions strongly preferred
Solid understanding and working knowledge of commercial HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry; Boiler 6 certification a plus
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace; familiarity with help desk systems (e.g., Zendesk) preferred
Prior supervisory, managerial, and/or customer service experience preferred
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required
Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced environment
Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively across departments
Preferred Knowledge & Certifications
OSHA certification preferred
Trade license in HVAC, electrical, or plumbing preferred
Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or similar credential preferred
Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance requirements in the District of Columbia
Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Effective communication and customer service skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb ladders
Ability to respond to facility emergencies, including occasional evenings and weekends
Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Effective communication and customer service skills
Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance requirements in the District of Columbia
School-based setting serving diverse and high-need student populations
Indoor and outdoor responsibilities across multiple campus areas
Fast-paced environment requiring flexibility and responsiveness
