Overview

Summary: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist Performs all general diagnostic radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures including skull, spine, torso, extremities, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, portable examinations, fluoroscopy, and C-arm manipulation for surgical cases. Responsibilities

Performs all general diagnostic radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures as described above.
Assists physicians with fluoroscopic exams to include routine and air-contrast studies of the gastrointestinal system, arthrograms, hip injections, myelograms, and other procedures using fluoroscopy as directed by the radiologist.
Administers contrast material orally, by enema, or intravenously under the close control of a staff physician.
Maintains ALARA exposures for patients, coworkers, and self; uses radiation safety devices to shield patients when exposure is possible; ensures proper use of shielding, collimation, and distance.
Identifies patients and procedures prior to exam, explains procedures to patients and/or family, and maintains accurate documentation of examinations in PACS and patient records.
Operates digital radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment and selects programmed factors; adjusts kVp, mA, exposure time, and focal spot size as needed; makes corrections for underexposure or overexposure; guides patient breathing as required.
Obtains and records quality images, sends images to PACS for storage, and maintains equipment cleanliness and readiness for examinations (portable/C-arm/OR settings).
Performs intra-operative radiographs/images or fluoroscopic procedures in operating rooms or related rooms using C-arm fluoroscopic equipment, portable radiographic equipment, or fixed radiographic/fluoroscopic equipment; ensures proper documentation of these examinations.
Ensures patient safety and appropriate procedural controls, including pregnancy screening when applicable and adherence to radiation safety procedures.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA policy.
Credentialing Standards: Must meet the standards in 42 CFR Part 75 and be credentialed as radiographic personnel; completion of an educational program meeting those standards and accredited by a recognized organization; be certified as radiographers in the field.
Education: Completion of a full-time post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program (at least 24 months) evidenced by a certificate or associate degree; accredited by JRCERT or other DOE-recognized accrediting agencies.
Certification: Must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) – Radiography (R).
Exception: Non-certified DRTs who meet ARRT eligibility may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B); the appointing official may waive certification for up to two years for a DRT under supervision at or above the full performance level (GS-5 level only).
English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by relevant statutes.
Grade Determinations: GS-5 through GS-8 levels described with specific experience/education and KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) at each grade.
Experience/ KSAs: For higher grades, demonstrate knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques, anatomy/positioning, patient safety procedures, radiographic equipment, computer skills, digital imaging, CR/DR systems, PACS, system operation checks, calibration parameters, patient records, and ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
Preferred: ARRT board certification in diagnostic radiology; reference materials available via VA Qualification Standards.
Work Details

Work Schedule: Full-time; Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
