Position Summary

Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Coach Men’s Basketball. This is a full‑time, 12‑month position with benefits. Under the general supervision of the Head Coach Men’s Basketball, this position will assist the head coach in coaching student‑athletes, implementing and instructing game strategy, recruiting prospective student‑athletes, monitoring student‑athlete academic progress, program organization, managing travel, managing student‑athlete scholarships and overseeing the discipline, conduct and image of the sport program and student‑athletes of a major university sport program in conjunction with other departmental responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative – 20%

Assist in the administration of the entire sport program, including creating daily and weekly practices, scheduling, game planning and implementation, recruiting, equipment management and facilities scheduling, with specific emphasis in opponent scouting reports and management of game day officiating reports.

Review opposing team film and provide scouting reports to coaches and student athletes.

Coaching – 20%

Coach student‑athletes individually and in groups and demonstrate game techniques; may manage a designated skill development area or group of positions, as assigned by the Head Coach.

Plan coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations for specified positions.

Develop, recommend and teach game strategy and position assignments; provide on‑court coaching during competition.

Academic Support – 10%

Provide an overall positive educational environment for student‑athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and prepare them for life beyond college.

In conjunction with the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) department, monitor academic progress and academic status of student‑athletes, implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff if needed.

Assist with SAASS unit on academic progress of men’s basketball student‑athletes.

Marketing – 10%

Point person for marketing and promotions, directly working with men’s basketball marketing director. Includes coordination of student‑athlete pictures, video board shoots, all game‑day needs and helping in social media marketing.

Scouting – 10%

Scout, identify, and establish relationships with high school, junior college and four‑year college prospective student‑athletes and their parents, guardians, and/or coaches.

When recruiting prospective student‑athletes, determine their academic eligibility according to NCAA rules by requesting transcripts and test scores.

Guide signees through the NIU application and NCAA Eligibility Center process.

Log recruiting calls, contacts and evaluations on Jump Forward.

Serve as the men’s basketball liaison to the athletics trainer regarding injury monitoring and management per the athletic trainer’s recommendations.

Video Exchange – 10%

Coordinate video exchange with opposing teams for countable coaches and game film exchange.

Public Relations – 5%

Promote the university, athletic department and specific sport through community events, public speaking, fundraising and marketing.

Serve as the Community Service liaison with the SAASS department.

Coordinate the needs of the department to ensure that all student athletes are present at all events.

Plan motivational speakers and participate in donor engagements with MBB donors and fans.

Student Conduct & Misc. Duties – 5%

Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student‑athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university.

Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student‑athletes within the specific sport program.

Cash handling responsibilities – $5,000‑$10,000 annually.

Assist with departmental needs as requested.

Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)

Bachelor’s Degree.

Minimum five (5) years of collegiate coaching experience, including basketball skills, game and training strategies, plus teaching progressions.

Experience with Synergy software program.

Preferred Qualifications (SPS)

D1 coaching experience.

Head coaching experience.

Experience working with Sports Code software program.

Physical capability: sitting, standing, walking, running, lifting up to 50lbs.
