Job Description
Health Professions Advising plays an important role in helping undergraduates pursue admission to competitive pre‑health graduate programs. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be a key contributor and partner with Hope's Academic Advising team, various academic departments, the Boerigter Center for Calling and Career, the Health Professions Advisory Committee, and the Admissions Office.
Responsibilities
Partner with the full‑time HPA to ensure consistent advising practices and messaging.
Provide individual advising with students considering health careers including but not limited to Medicine, Dental, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Chiropractic Medicine. Advising can include admissions requirements for professional schools, course selection, academic major discernment, work and volunteer experience, graduate school applications, and navigating a liberal arts education.
Support the full‑time HPA in teaching sections of IDS 329 Transitions to Health Professions, a course designed to help students explore the qualifications, competencies, and applications for their chosen health profession.
Effectively communicate the expectations and requirements of health profession programs to students and colleagues.
Develop web resources for students to utilize as additional advising tools.
Present on the health professions at various admissions‑sponsored events to aid in the recruitment of prospective students.
Present on the health professions to current students through group advising.
Help develop and promote experiential learning opportunities.
Work with campus partners to raise the profile of the Pre‑Health Professions program at Hope College.
Participate with the full‑time HPA in professional development, early assurance programs, and other regional and national HPA networks.
Develop and create on‑campus learning opportunities for pre‑health students.
Serve on the Health Professions Advisory Committee representing the office of Health Professions Advising.
Qualifications
Masters level education in science/health‑related area, counseling, higher education/student affairs, or related area. Or equivalent education and experience.
Experience in academic advising and/or significant natural and applied science course familiarity.
Knowledge of the health professions.
The ability to handle interruptions in a fast‑paced office environment.
Exceptional interpersonal communication and writing skills.
Possess computer skills including Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
Ability to excel as a team player and also take ownership of her/his own work.
Commitment to the goals and character of a Christian liberal arts college.
