Job Summary
The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. The CMA performs routine administrative and patient‑care supportive duties in a health‑system medical practice that assists medical and/or nursing staff with patient examination and treatment and ensures the clinic runs smoothly.
Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
– Take medical histories, record vitals, explain treatment procedures, prepare patients for exams, assist during examination and procedures, collect and prepare specimens, perform basic lab tests, take ECGs, remove sutures, change dressings, promote patient/family understanding, document in the record, dispose of contaminated supplies, perform instrument processing, disinfection, sterilization, telephoning prescriptions, prepare and administer medications, authorize drug refills, and perform other clinical functions as delegated.
Administrative Responsibilities
– Greet patients, answer phones, schedule appointments, check‑out patients, handle referrals, arrange admissions and lab services, update and file records, fill out insurance forms, handle billing and collections, provide correspondence, order supplies and forms, perform other administrative duties, and may serve as liaison for clinic activities, joint commission or clinic committees.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Level I:
Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. High school or GED required.
Level II:
Graduation from a program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES strongly preferred. High school or GED required.
Level III:
Same as Level II (strongly preferred). High school or GED required.
Level IV:
Same as Level II (strongly preferred). High school or GED required.
Experience
Level I:
No experience required.
Level II:
1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified.
Level III:
2 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified.
Level IV:
3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified.
Certifications
Any Level:
Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA‑CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required; BLS required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Good customer service skills.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions; high school education or medical assistant training.
Physical ability to lift and transport stretcher or wheelchair patients when necessary.
Knowledge of sterile techniques, routine medication administration, sanitation, personal hygiene, infection control, and safety precautions.
Typing skills and medical terminology levels II and III.
Ability to communicate relevant information and collaborate with patients and staff.
