Responsibilities
Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations (ANA, 2010).

Qualifications
Licensure:

Active New York State Nursing License in good standing.

Education:

Associate, Baccalaureate (preferred), Master’s, or Doctorate Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.

Certification:

American Nurses Association endorsed certifications or Academy of Medical‑Surgical Nurses Certification preferred (based on specialty hours of work requirement).

Physical Demands:

Considerable standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching; considerable visual demands.

New hires must be able to perform RN essential physical functioning demands as determined by employee health / pre‑screening assessment.

When a caregiver must lift more than 35 lbs of a patient’s weight, the patient should be considered fully dependent and assistive devices should be used.

Ergonomic stressors include moderate to frequent heavy lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients; must participate in safe patient handling initiatives.

ADA requirements: applicants must be able to perform the essential responsibilities either aided or unaided or with reasonable accommodation.

Mental Demands:

Ability to foster collaborative relationships, work well under pressure, organize and synthesize new information, prioritize tasks, and possess critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility.

Ability to multi‑task and demonstrate sensitivity to customer needs and expectations.

Work schedules may include irregular hours including nights and weekends.

Working Conditions:

Contact with patient’s bodily fluids or waste under various circumstances.

Exposure to unpleasant patient elements such as blood, other potentially infectious material.

Subject to varying and unpredictable situations; handle emergency and crisis situations.

Must wear personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, respirators, coveralls, vests, lead vests, full body suits) to ensure safety.

May have contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical or other workplace hazards.

ORMC abides with the New York Department of Labor / Nursing Licensure Board recommendation on the 16‑hour work limit.

Patient and Staff Safety:

Recognizes importance of patient/staff safety precautions.

Consistently utilizes precautions and follows appropriate procedures to enhance safety in daily operations.

Identifies and reports any potentially dangerous situations.

Immediately takes action to minimize risk of injury; reports errors to supervisor and uses MIDAS RDE system reporting when appropriate; participates in root cause analysis and other risk reduction efforts.

Training:

Clinical nurses must complete annual mandatory training within specified time frames.

All clinical nurses must have BLS training kept current.

In certain clinical areas, additional AHA training may be required and must be completed prior to starting the position.

Rowley Family Birthing Center Resource Team – Required experience: Recent inpatient labor and delivery or mother‑baby experience (within 5 years) or 3 years recent OB outpatient experience. Preferred: NCC specialty. Required: Stable course; NRP within 3 months of hire or transfer; ACLS within 6 months of hire or transfer; Evidence of fetal monitoring course completion; C‑EFM within 36 months after unit orientation. Recommended: Stable course (as listed). Mandatory: NRP, ACLS, fetal monitoring and C‑EFM as above.
