This position administers nursing care to designated patients under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties including but not limited to:
Assists the Charge/Staff Nurse to organize and deliver patient care, and to supervise staff
Collects data related to the patient's condition and reports it promptly to the Charge/Staff Nurse, including pain assessment, pain scale usage and documentation
Follows safety procedures. Utilizes appropriate observation level for patient: Q15 minute checks, 1:1 monitoring, and/or specific precautions
Provides direction and orients new staff in a welcoming manner. Demonstrates knowledge and adherence to hospital policy and procedures
Self-directed, recognizes what needs to be done and takes action
Uses good judgment and requires minimal supervision, but can confer with the Charge/Staff Nurse or House Supervisor as needed
Provides nursing care within the scope of practice to meet the unique needs of each patient
Assists in the delivery of patient care in an acute psychiatric setting for patients with a wide range of psychiatric and medical conditions
Practices the "5 Rights" of medication administration. Ensures medication consents are obtained and signed prior to administering psychotropic medications
Initiates appropriate infection control interventions and updates the treatment plan when medications are ordered to treat a medical issue

Qualifications
Education:
Graduate from an accredited Licensed Vocational Nursing program required.
Credentials:
Current Licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse with the State of California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians required.
Experience:
Clinical experience in a psychiatric setting preferred. 1-3 years' experience with military and behavioral health population, preferably in an inpatient setting.
Knowledge/Skills:
Interacts positively with patients on a daily basis
Capable of adapting to varying workloads and assignments
Works well under highly stressful conditions
Makes sound, independent judgments based on scientific and ethical principles
Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members
Uses effective reading, written and verbal communication skills
Utilizes math skills to calculate medication dosages
