Salary: $37,838 - $50,848

Hourly: $18.19 - $24.44

Job Summary
This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on the experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties
Highway Operations Worker: $18.19 Grade 14
Entry level position. Duties include operating motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care, roadside shoulder restoration, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, and vehicle and equipment care.

Highway Operations Tech 1: $20.46/hr Grade 17
Apprentice classification. Will learn advanced duties such as enhanced operation of motorized vehicles, advanced pavement care, and additional signing and striping responsibilities.

Highway Operations Tech 2: $22.45/hr Grade 18
Intermediate classification. Performs broad scope of highway operational duties and may lead subordinate work, scheduling, inspecting, training, and guiding staff.

Highway Operations Tech 3: $24.44/hr Grade 19
Full journey classification. Responsible for high level highway operations and supervisory duties including scheduling, assigning, inspecting, training, and guiding staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Highway Operations Worker
Preferred: 6 months of roadway/highway experience, including motorized vehicle operation, heavy‑equipment maintenance, signing/striping, pavement care, and associated tasks.

Highway Operations Tech 1
Required: 1 year of roadway/highway experience in similar duties.

Highway Operations Tech 2
Required: 2 years of roadway/highway experience in similar duties.

Highway Operations Tech 3
Required: 3 years of roadway/highway experience in similar duties.

Selective Preference
Highway Operations Worker: preference given to candidates with six months of experience in related fields.

Pre‑Employment Requirements
Highway Operations Worker Requirements
Must obtain Arizona CDL Class “A” permit within 90 days of hire and a Class “A” CDL within 6 months.

Highway Operations Tech 1-3 Requirements
Must hold an Arizona Class “A” CDL (manual or automatic transmissions) with an “N” tanker endorsement before start date. Additional endorsements may be required.

All Positions

Register with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse prior to employment.

Respond to emergency callouts 24/7; must reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.

Work may involve extremes of cold and heat, rugged terrain, and high‑speed traffic.

Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull 50 lbs.

May require State Board of Pesticide Control licensing to dispense herbicides/pesticides.
