SALARY:

$24.00 - $29.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

Assemble, erect, install, and maintain pumps and motors, filter underdrains, bearing assemblies, sludge collection equipment, shafts, piping supports, turbines, motor mounts, louvers, spill containment, chemical storage, and other equipment used in water plants, pump stations, towers, and tanks.

Assemble, repair, and install machinery of all kinds or assist other maintenance technicians in doing so.

Safely operate cranes, tow motors, power tools, hand tools, and other motorized equipment.

Perform basic motor repairs, including replacing bearings, packing, gaskets, components, and housings.

Replace, modify, and repair existing piping.

Repair and occasionally use landscaping equipment (lawnmowers, weed whackers, blowers, pumps, chainsaws, snow blowers).

Measure and mark material and perform straightening, cutting, shaping, soldering, welding, and testing.

Perform drilling and tapping.

Identify faulty equipment through observation and testing metrics.

Assess condition of parts using micrometers, calipers, and specifications.

Select appropriate tools, machines, and materials for machinery work.

Clean, oil, and lubricate machinery and equipment as directed or without supervision.

Clean tools and work areas as directed.

Assist in startup and transfer of operations to emergency backup power (generators) and return to normal mode.

Maintain accurate records of parts, tools, and maintenance logs.

Comply with all applicable safety regulations and policies.

Operate lathes, mill machines, drill presses, grinders, and other machine tools in fabricating tools and parts; perform HVAC maintenance, generator maintenance, chemical feed equipment maintenance, and other specialized maintenance tasks.

Assist with development, instruction, and training of less‑experienced Industrial Maintenance Technician personnel.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is required. Qualified candidates must possess either a diploma from a trade school or maintenance and fabrication program, or a minimum of 3 years of full‑time paid experience in industrial equipment maintenance and/or operation of machine shop equipment in an industrial setting.

Must be able to operate various hand and power tools.

Proficient performing basic administrative tasks on computers and able to learn and operate the City’s work order management system (including Microsoft Office applications).

Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and shop drawings.

Basic understanding of mechanical systems and fabrication equipment.

Ability to learn safe and proper operation of equipment such as lathes, mill machines, drill presses, and other machine tools; perform generator maintenance tasks; perform routine facility and production equipment maintenance tasks; and perform specialized maintenance and repair tasks.

Must be able to work in confined spaces, pass a respirator fit test, and lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.

Must be able to walk, climb ladders and steps, crouch, twist, bend, and work in awkward positions for extended periods of time.

Valid State of Ohio Driver’s license is required.

Eligibility and Additional Criteria

Residency credit: If primary residence in City of Cleveland for at least one year at time of filing application, may receive 10 points added to passing score (if exam considers residency credit). To substantiate, submit legible copies of signed and notarized Residency Affidavit (link: https://www.clevelandohio.gov/sites/clevelandohio/files/AffidavitOfResidency0321.pdf).

Veterans preference: Eligible veterans receive credit points; proof of active service must be presented at filing. An honorable discharge adds 5 points; a service‑connected disability >15% adds 10 points.
