Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval is awarded up to $200,000 and the eligibility period ranges from one to five years, as determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications

United States Citizenship:

Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Education:

Have a master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not substitute for the master's degree.
Verification:

Verify the degree by checking the CSWE accreditation standards for a master’s of social work.
Licensure:

Persons hired to social worker positions in the GS‑0185 series must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s level. VHA may waive this requirement for GS‑9 appointments pending completion of state prerequisites. For GS‑11 and above, licensure or certification is required. If not licensed at appointment, must become licensed within three years.
English Language Proficiency:

Must be proficient in spoken and written English as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Grandfathering Provision:

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable only to current VHA employees in this occupation).
Grade Determinations for GS‑9:

Experience, education, and licensure; demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in working with diverse veterans and families, psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, implementation of modalities, client relationships, and fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses.
Grade Determinations for GS‑11:

Minimum of one year of post‑MSW experience equivalent to GS‑9 or a doctoral degree in social work; demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in community resource referral, psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, implementation of modalities, and supervisory consultation.
Preferred Experience:

At least one year of experience in the mental health field and at least one year of case management experience.

Responsibilities

Provide clinical social work and case management services to veterans in the HUD‑VASH program as directed by the HUD‑VASH supervisor.
Screen clients to verify veteran status, eligibility for VA health care, family income, and clinical need.
Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluations, determine acuity status, make psychosocial diagnoses, and guide treatment planning and referrals.
Develop Housing Stability Plans (treatment plans) with each veteran to support sustainable HUD‑VASH housing.
Provide the appropriate level of case management and supportive services—primarily in the community or at home—based on needs.
Assist veterans with voucher recertification and facilitate the Housing Choice Voucher portability process with VA medical facilities and PHA partners.
Participate in program‑specific conference calls, broadcasts, and trainings, including monthly national HUD‑VASH operations, clinical, and orientation calls.
Work a schedule of Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential for compression or flexibility at supervisor discretion.
