Job Title: Shop Mechanic Assistant – Entry Level
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and reliable Shop Mechanic Assistant to support our maintenance team in servicing trucks and heavy equipment. This entry-level role is ideal for someone looking to build hands‑on experience and develop a career in diesel or heavy equipment mechanics.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the lead mechanic with daily maintenance and repair tasks on trucks and heavy equipment.
Perform basic preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, brake inspections, and tire maintenance.
Conduct routine inspections and report mechanical issues or safety concerns.
Accurately complete work orders and maintain detailed service records.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper care of tools and equipment.
Pick up parts and supplies as needed.
Provide roadside assistance or support during equipment breakdowns when required.
Safety Responsibilities
Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable OSHA regulations.
Properly use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Identify and report unsafe conditions, hazards, or incidents immediately.
Assist in maintaining a clean and hazard‑free shop environment to prevent accidents.
Use tools and equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines.
Participate in safety meetings, trainings, and toolbox talks.
Adhere to all traffic laws and company policies when operating company vehicles or responding to roadside assistance calls.
Qualifications
Basic knowledge or understanding of truck and heavy equipment maintenance.
Strong willingness to learn and follow instructions.
Ability to adhere to maintenance schedules and safety procedures.
Dependable with a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and emergency situations.
Physical Requirements
Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs. and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
Comfortable using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
Ability to climb ladders and work in environments involving heavy equipment.
Capable of standing, bending, and working in various weather conditions for extended periods.
Reasonable Suspicion Testing
Any employee displaying signs of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while in the workplace will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. The determination by an authorized, trained representative of Ernest Maier, Inc. that reasonable suspicion exists must be based on specific, contemporaneous, articulable observations concerning the appearance, behavior, speech or body odors of the employee.
Management Responsibility
Managers / Supervisors must ensure that all employees under their supervision are physically and mentally able to perform the duties required. All employees are encouraged to report to their supervisors in confidence any time they have a concern about the ability of a coworker to perform.
