Street Maintenance Worker I
We are recruiting for Street Maintenance Worker I positions. The recruitment will close on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. (PDT). Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply immediately.
Salary : $25.17 – $32.30 hourly ($52,362.12 – $67,192.32 annually). New hires typically start at the beginning of the salary range.
Job Overview
The Street Maintenance Worker I will support the construction, repair, and upkeep of streets and essential public infrastructure, including sidewalks, storm drains, graffiti removal, traffic signs, and heavy equipment operation.
Responsibilities
Work safely in hot, cold, and inclement weather conditions.
Participate in storm response and emergency operations, including extended or irregular hours as needed.
Perform construction, maintenance, and repair work on public infrastructure such as streets, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains, traffic signage, and related facilities.
Break and remove pavement; dig, shovel, haul, and load construction materials; clean and restore work sites upon completion.
Sweep debris and litter; lift and carry heavy objects; load and unload trucks; assist with disposal at dump sites.
Operate motorized vehicles and heavy equipment (dump trucks, tractors, skip loaders, bobcats, backhoes, front loaders, jackhammers, etc.); inspect vehicles and report maintenance needs.
Use pneumatic tools, concrete saws, hand tools (shovels, picks, brooms, wheelbarrows, rakes, rollers, etc.).
Drive vehicles to job sites; set up and remove traffic control devices; direct traffic during lane closures, construction zones, and DUI checkpoints.
Remove and install streetlight poles and fixtures; perform maintenance, repairs, and alterations to City buildings, facilities, and equipment.
Lay, rake, roll, and finish hot asphalt and oil-based materials.
Perform rough carpentry, basic pipefitting, and apply protective coatings to surfaces.
Build and remove concrete forms; mix, pour, trowel, and finish concrete, cement, and masonry.
Conduct storm drain maintenance, including component replacement and debris clearing.
Measure and lay out centerlines, crosswalks, and other pavement markings.
Maintain accurate records, logs, and basic written reports of work performed.
Respond to public inquiries and concerns politely and professionally.
Perform weed abatement duties and apply herbicides as required.
Assist other divisions with maintenance and repair tasks as needed.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma (or equivalent).
Two (2) years of skilled experience in public works–related construction or maintenance work.
Licenses & Certifications
A valid California Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
Within one year of employment, obtain a valid Class A or B California Driver’s License with tank endorsement, no manual transmission restrictions, and no air brakes restrictions. Maintain this license throughout employment.
CPR and First Aid certification within one year of employment.
Applicants must complete DOT mandated alcohol and drug screening. A positive test or refusal to test within the past two years disqualifies an applicant.
Physical Demands
Mobility to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs and ladders, and use hands to handle tools. Must lift, carry, push, and pull materials up to 100 pounds. Required vision for reading printed materials and computer screens, color vision for identifying materials, hearing and speech to communicate. Finger dexterity needed for keyboard use. Works on uneven, slippery surfaces and may work in hot, cold, wet conditions. Ability to work extended hours and rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Environmental Elements
Outdoor construction and maintenance environment with moderate to high noise, hot and cold temperatures, inclement weather, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical or electrical hazards. May interact with upset staff or public and private representatives. Must work extended hours and rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
