The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of

Senior Street Maintenance Worker

to fill multiple vacancies in the

Street Maintenance Division

of the

Public Works Department . The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six months.

The Street Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure to ensure the safe, efficient movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The division has approximately 44 employees in several crews that handle paving, slurry seal application, pothole filling, sign fabrication and installation, wall and fence repair, guardrail repair, concrete removal and repair, weed control, street painting, graffiti removal, storm event response, and more.

Responsibilities

Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work for streets, sidewalks, signs, storm drains, and other public right‑of‑ways; maintain and care for walkways, bike trails, and public right‑of‑ways; adhere to safety and occupational hazard regulations; lead crews and provide oversight.

Drive a truck used to transport materials, tools, and equipment; operate a variety of motorized equipment including dump truck, water truck, patch truck, vector truck, pickup truck, sprayers, steamers, high‑pressure hoses, and vacuums.

Support a small crew in inspecting ditches, drainage areas, and intermittent water areas for noxious weeds; identify weeds and apply appropriate herbicides.

Maintain and repair guardrails, fences, bridges, and other structures; report hazardous conditions and ensure timely handling of dangerous conditions.

Fabricate, weld, and install various signs and oversee crews involved in related work.

Participate in complex street striping and traffic marking for crosswalks, traffic islands, lanes, parking lots, and curbs; utilize paint, tape, flags, cones, and other traffic control devices.

Operate street sweepers and oversee sweeping of streets and gutters; monitor equipment, check for broom and chain wear, and replace as needed.

Oversee graffiti eradication operations and community cleanup projects.

Assist in storm control activities including placing sandbags, barricades, and picking up litter or debris.

Prepare and complete daily logs; estimate quantities of material and types required for various jobs and sites.

Respond to emergencies as directed and handle public or community inquiries; contact residents and businesses to obtain permission for debris removal, repairs, or services.

Provide training, guidance, and oversight for lower‑level staff and volunteers assisting with street maintenance and care.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Recruitment Guidelines
Education:

High school graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).

Experience:

Three years of experience performing street maintenance, construction, or related work comparable to a Street Maintenance Worker.

Possession of an appropriate, valid class “A” or “B” with applicable endorsements, California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is required.

Highly desirable qualifications include experience with a large paving crew and asphalt patch crew.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in the field with exposure to inclement weather, hazards, chemicals, equipment, construction materials, and fumes. Employees may interact with staff and/or public and private representatives and will provide professional customer service.
