Job Description
Youth Frontiers is a youth mentoring program for young women aged 10-17 years in contact with or at risk of contact with the criminal justice and child protection systems. It aims to engage young women, build self-esteem and confidence, allows positive connection with peers and the community and overall increase the health and wellbeing of young people and therefore decreasing their connection with the Justice System.

In addition, the Youth Frontiers program runs an Empowering Young Women’s group each school term, connecting young women with other young women, building self-confidence and self-esteem, provides education sessions to increase health and wellbeing and allows greater positive connections to the community.

Development and delivery of the YF program in accordance with best practice principles.

The Youth Frontiers (YF) Coordinator will deliver the program’s objectives, train and support mentors and ensure compliance with DCJ contractual requirements as detailed in the YF program specifications.

The (YF) Coordinator participates in the recruiting and screening suitable mentors into the program and actively promoting the program. The position will function under the supervision of the YF Program Manager.

Responsibilities

Provide training and support to the Youth Frontier mentors

Develop and facilitate evidence-based programs, such as the Empowering Young Women’s Program and other activities as the needs are identified.

Facilitate school holiday programs for young women engaged in the Youth Frontiers Program.

Liaise with schools to deliver evidence-based programs to young women – this could include Love Bites, Rock and Water and Drum Beat.

Implement structured mentoring activities in relation to personal and life skills development for the mentees.

Support the mentors to connect with social networks and engage with community.

Ensure data integrity through ongoing training in Community Data Solutions (CDS) and Data Exchange (DEX) and ensure all data is recorded as per these systems.

Provide support for young people to establish, strengthen or expand their educational and employment related networks and opportunities.

At the direction of the Manager, establish and nurture partnerships in service delivery amongst agencies in the area including specific mainstream services (i.e. health, Centrelink, education, family support, youth services, etc.), "First to know" agencies (i.e. the police, schools, hospitals/key health services, govt. department offices) and specific agencies who are key to the issue of youth mentoring in this area (i.e. Juvenile Justice, OOHC service, Aboriginal and CALD support agencies).

Assist the manager in promoting the service and educate the community about at-risk young people.

Actively engaged in evaluation of the program, including programs, program delivery, client survey (both develop of and implementation of) and policies and training.

Maintain collaborative co-case management partnerships with appropriate SHS and mainstream youth services to achieve quality outcomes for young people and their families.

Selection Criteria

Formal Tertiary qualifications and or qualifications with significant experience in the community sector.

Demonstrated experience in working within a mentoring program or similar for young people.

Demonstrated experience working with complex needs clients and an understanding of applying a youth centred, strengths based and trauma informed practice.

Experience or understanding of early intervention and prevention models.

Demonstrated ability to develop and or facilitate evidence based programs to young people.

Demonstrated understanding of child protection issues with capacity to identify levels of risk requiring statutory child protection intervention.

Possess a high level of cultural competency and demonstrated excellence in working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people. Families and organisations and planning, delivering and evaluating services in a culturally sensitive manner.

Well-developed interpersonal, mediation and conflict resolution skills.

Demonstrated competency in community liaise and community capacity building, working with a range of appropriate professional in youth related services.

Capacity to work with minimal supervision, but able to work as part of a team

Ability to be flexible, responsive with an ability to adapt delivery models to respond to the needs of the young people and address barriers to access services and support.

Ability to meet deadlines, manage competing priorities and tasks.
