Job Description
The custodian will maintain an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public; provide equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events; perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance; and minimize property damage, loss, and liability exposure.
Responsibilities
Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in your position.
Arrange furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
Clean assigned school or district facilities such as classrooms, offices, restrooms, lunch rooms, halls, carpets, removing graffiti, windows, walls, bleachers, stage, locker rooms, sidewalks, grounds, etc., to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
Complete required training to maintain current knowledge regarding specific job and district, state, and federal rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and laws.
Distribute supplies, equipment and/or mail (e.g., fill soap dispensers, towel/toilet paper dispensers, packages, furniture, TV/VCR carts, etc.) to appropriate parties and/or locations.
Execute minor repairs (e.g., assemble furniture, change ballast, plumbing, locks, windows, ceiling tiles, filters, etc.) to ensure items are available and in safe working condition.
Inform students, staff, and visitors about activities, safety, and/or proper maintenance of facilities.
Inspect facilities to ensure suitability for safe operations, maintain an attractive and clean condition, and report necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
Maintain supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for availability of items required to properly stock facilities.
Oversee students assigned to cafeteria or other duties for appropriate instruction, direction and oversight while volunteering and/or assigned to cafeteria detail.
Perform assigned work to assist with the timely and satisfactory completion of special projects.
Prepare facility for daily operations (depending on shift) such as opening gates, raising flags, unlocking doors, crossing signs, etc., ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
Assist others in scheduling facilities to ensure accurate scheduling and provide assistance and information to those requesting use.
Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms) to resolve safety issues and maintain a functioning educational environment.
Secure facilities and grounds (depending on shift) (e.g., lock doors, turn off lights, set alarm) to minimize property damage, equipment loss and liability.
Perform other duties as assigned by administrators.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
Valid Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
Satisfactory criminal background check.
Prior custodial experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; follow directions and apply common sense.
Knowledge of current Human Resource leave system and, if applicable, Skyward inventory system.
Ability to function as a member of a harmonious, efficient, highly productive team; use problem solving and interpersonal skills to motivate self and others.
Maintain a high degree of initiative and dependability.
Reports To
Head Custodian, Principal or Department Director; Supervisions: N/A.
Physical Requirements
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
Terms of Employment
Position is twelve or ten months; eight or four hours per day. Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be as established by the District.
