Position Overview
TxDOT's Dallas District seeks a Construction Inspector to oversee bridge and roadway construction, environmental compliance, and material inspection across the North-Central region. The role involves field work, reporting, and collaboration with contractors and engineering staff. It may include late or night shifts as required by the area office.
Salary Range
Construction Inspector I (B18): $45,521 – $71,055 annually
Construction Inspector II (B19): $48,244 – $76,028 annually

Job Responsibilities
Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors meet plans and specifications. Acts as consultant on progress and problem resolution. May be sole inspector on small projects or assist in large or complex projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer for work approval. Requires contractor contact, materials testing, and record‑keeping.
Calculates payments due to contractors.
Ensures compliance with plans and specifications.
Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans; inspects barricades and traffic control devices.
Observes ongoing construction work.
Oversees construction record‑keeping, recommends payments, change orders, and reviews proposed change orders.
Prepares monthly and final estimates.
Assists in engineering data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development.
Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
Documents work progress and issues.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Additional Duties for Construction Inspector II
Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors, and field personnel.
Serves as a lead worker or project leader.
Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Experience:
Construction Inspector I: no experience required. Construction Inspector II: 1 year of construction inspection or related field experience.
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid driver’s license; vehicle operation required.
Competencies (Construction Inspector I or II)
Knowledge of applicable plans, specifications, estimates, and testing methods.
Familiarity with construction engineering policies and procedures.
Understanding of inspection methods and engineering fundamentals.
Ability to read and interpret plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
Proficiency in computer applications and systems.
Logical reasoning and decision-making to support business objectives.
Additional Competencies for Construction Inspector II
Extensive knowledge of traffic management and control procedures.
Expertise in computer applications and systems.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Exposure to outside environmental conditions; no adequate weather protection.
Exposure to extreme temperatures above 100°F or below 32°F for >1 hour.
Noise, hazards such as moving vehicles, high places, chemicals.
Wearing protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
Sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 10 lbs.
Pre‑employment physical and random drug testing required; medical marijuana not accepted.
Work Schedule and Status
Full‑time, day shifts (occasionally night or late shifts); 40 hours per week; regular, non‑management employee.
