Job Description
Assists in ensuring availability of cleaned, prepared, and sterilized equipment and supplies for surgical procedures, serves as a resource for clinical knowledge, and performs additional duties as assigned by the SPD Supervisor or Manager of Sterile Processing. All duties are performed without supervision and support direct patient care in clinical, satellite, and operative settings.
Education
Required – High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred – Additional degrees, business training, or certifications combined with relevant experience. Additional courses in Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology also preferred.
Work Experience
Preferred – 2 years in sterile processing.
Certifications
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) – International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)
Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) – Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) – CBSPD
OR certification in Surgical Technology with successful completion of an internal sterile processing training course within six months of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Computer skills for data entry and retrieval of patient information, including proficiency with Windows applications.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, able to present information clearly and professionally to various audiences.
Strong analytical, organizational, time‑management, conflict‑resolution, and decision‑making skills.
Ability to adapt to change positively and exercise good judgment in performing duties.
Maintains required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials.
Job Duties
Perform general and specialized instrument care duties.
Provide supplies as needed for surgical procedures.
Disassemble and clean critical reusable medical equipment per Manufacturer's Instructions for Use (MIFU).
Inspect, package, and reassemble surgical instruments and trays according to established priority.
Practice high‑level disinfection, pre‑vacuum sterilization, gravity displacement sterilization, and hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization techniques per MIFU.
Maintain records and document control as defined in Standard Operating Procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements.
Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy, communication style, and obtaining necessary permissions.
Other related duties as required.
Physical and Environmental Demands
Medium work: periodically exerting 20–50 pounds of force, frequently 10–25 pounds, and/or continuously up to 10 pounds to move objects. Must be able to stoop, bend, reach, lift, and grab with arms and hands, stand for prolonged periods, and work a flexible schedule (e.g., 24/7, weekends, holidays, on‑call). Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, communicable diseases, hazardous medications, and hazardous waste is inherent in the role.
