Summary
Primary purpose of this position is to perform phlebotomy, accessioning, and processing within the Ambulatory Care department under direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. The LPN/LVN is assigned to the John J. Pershing VAMC – Sikeston VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic. Duties are performed in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service, and an environment committed to serving veterans.
Qualifications
United States citizenship. Non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA policy.
Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the relevant state agency or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
Full, active, current, unrestricted licensure as an LPN/LVN in any U.S. state, territory or commonwealth.
English proficiency – spoken and written – required for direct patient care positions.
Minimum 2 years experience as an LPN in a PACT team, nursing home, in‑home care, or hospice setting; laboratory experience preferred.
Grade‑specific qualifications: GS‑3: none beyond basic; GS‑4: 6 months qualifying experience or graduation plus 1 year of experience; GS‑5: at least 1 year at GS‑4 level or equivalent; GS‑6: at least 1 year at GS‑5 level or equivalent.
Responsibilities
Perform assigned nursing tasks appropriate to veteran age and era.
Observe, document, and report care and patient response.
Seek assistance from the RN or medical provider when patient condition changes.
Assist in the orientation and competency validation of students, peers, and clerical staff.
Advocate for patient and family rights.
Conduct mandatory reviews, including motivational interviewing, to promote patient self‑management toward individualized life plan of care.
Support patient‑driven care using evidence‑based principles.
Use clinical judgment in selecting procedures and treatments, accurately recording relevant patient information.
Identify and respond to equipment malfunction, safety hazards, supply deficiencies.
Utilize computer systems (EHR, VISTA, Mailman) to enter and retrieve electronic data.
Participate in preparedness for emergencies; initiate appropriate emergency interventions.
Assist in diagnostic tests and specialized procedures, including pre‑procedure preparation, assistance during examination, and post‑procedure monitoring.
Serve as a preceptor for less experienced LPNs/LVNs or NAs/HTs on complex tasks.
Seek educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and share new knowledge with staff.
Physical Requirements
Visual acuity, hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity.
Ability to stand, walk, stoop, sit, bend, pull, and push up to 35 pounds for extended periods.
