Nursing Assistant I + Clerical (CST) needed for the Acute Neurosurgery and ENT Care Unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC. The Acute Neurosurgery and ENT Care Unit is a 27-bed unit comprised of post‑operative surgical patients. Our Neurosurgical patients have a variety of presentations including post‑operative brain and spinal surgeries, cancer, neuro‑ and spinal‑trauma, and stroke. Our ENT patients predominately present with head and neck malignancies, including cancer and infection, and require a variety of surgical interventions involving the head, mouth, tongue, jaw, thyroid, and oropharynx.
Working on this unit will provide countless opportunities to expand and strengthen foundational clinical and critical thinking skills, including but not limited to airway management, tracheal suctioning, drains, feeding tubes, in‑depth neurological and stroke assessment, and much more.

This is a 36‑hour per week position; working 12‑hour rotating shifts (7am‑7pm and 7pm‑7:30am) with weekend and holiday rotation. The position qualifies for an extensive benefit package including PTO hours accrued based on the number of worked hours.

Summary

Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patients and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance functions.
Responsibilities

Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procure equipment and supplies.
Critically review patient care documentation, noting significant changes in the patient’s condition and reporting immediately to a registered nurse or physician.
Provide clerical tasks including organizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested, answering the telephone/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Perform routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies. Provide administrative support including PI audits and data entry.
Provide clinical support assistance, including cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re‑stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in orientation of new employees and students.
Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation. Measure and record vital signs, height, and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Professional Experience Requirements:
Prior experience not required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements:
Must be fluent in verbal and written English language. Ability to develop computer skills if not currently competent.
