Summary
The Primary Purpose of the Position is to provide radiography imaging for general radiology. Performs a wide variety of diagnostic radiography exams under the direction of a physician. Operates all radiographic equipment including general diagnostic and PACS related equipment as part of the diagnostic plan for patients in the Imaging Service. Supports Radiologists and/or other medical officers.
Qualifications
This announcement is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until all positions are filled. The first cut‑off will be November 25, 2025. Applications received after this date will be sent to management every two weeks until the position is filled. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other accrediting agencies recognized by the Department of Education.
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT).
Non‑certified DRTs who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for ARRT may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B).
Appointing officials may waive the requirement of certification for a period not to exceed two years for a DRT that provides care under the supervision of a certified DRT at or above the full performance level. This exception applies only at the GS‑5 entry level. For grade levels above entry level, the candidate must be certified.
English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – 7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS‑05 (Entry Level) – None beyond the basic requirements; GS‑06 (Developmental) – Requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or the successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree in radiography or an equivalent field; GS‑07 – Requires experience or education as detailed below; GS‑08 – Requires at least one year of experience at the next lower grade level or advanced registry program certification with a bachelor’s degree in radiography or related field; The candidate must demonstrate all listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic technique standards for minimum radiographic exposure.
Knowledge of anatomy and positioning.
Knowledge of patient safety procedures.
Knowledge of radiographic producing equipment.
Ability to learn basic computer functions.
Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust image quality within the digital system.
Knowledge of contrast materials required for the requested study.
Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum exposure techniques, beam limitation, and use of lead shielding.
Knowledge of computed radiography (CR) readers and digital imaging systems.
Knowledge of PACS and basic computer skills.
Ability to check systems for operation and assess performance against established guidelines.
Knowledge of calibration parameters and ability to adjust as needed.
Knowledge of patient clinical records, diagnoses, and laboratory results.
Ability to monitor patient physiological changes during procedures and communicate with the radiologist.
Exceptional interpersonal skills when dealing with patients, staff, and visitors.
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and cross‑sectional anatomy to interpret images accurately.
Physical Requirements
Heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over).
Heavy carrying (45 lbs. and over).
Straight pulling (up to 1 hour).
Pushing (1–2 hours).
Reaching above shoulder height, use of fingers, both hands required.
Walking, standing, and repeated bending (up to 3 hours each).
Rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
Near vision correctable to 13–16 inches.

Duties
Perform diagnostic radiographic procedures in clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers.
Produce radiographic studies used for medical diagnosis.
Operate Digital Radiography (DR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS).
Review prior images, laboratory reports, and nursing notes to optimize techniques and positioning.
Interrogate patients for symptoms and pertinent information.
Explain procedures to patients, position them, select technical factors, and set up accessory equipment.
Advise radiologists of procedure progress and notify them of significant findings.
Recognize all visualized structures and consult on significant findings.
Confirm results with radiologists before discharging patients.
Assist radiologists and student technologists with fluoroscopy and radiography.
Process exposed images using computed radiography and archive to PACS.
Participate in image management evaluation, analysis, and formulation.
Prioritize critical and emergency procedures and adjust patient scheduling accordingly.
Screen requests for proper clinical history and relevant data.
Modify examinations to match written clinical history as appropriate.
Maintain contact with patients throughout examinations and intervene when necessary.
Serve patients in the Medical Center and coordinate care if needed.
Process digital images for PACS and generate hard copies for medical‑legal purposes.
Maintain radiographic suites in a clean and sanitary condition.
Manage supplies, reorder when necessary, and request additional supplies as needed.
Be available for irregular tours of duty when required.
Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm or 7:30 am – 4:00 pm with rotating on‑call and holiday recruitment/relocation incentives. May be authorized for a Highly Qualified Individual pay. Competitive salary with regular increases.
Paid Time Off
37‑50 days of annual paid time, including 13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 federal holidays. Eligible applicants may receive credit toward annual leave based on prior work or military experience.
Parental Leave
After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster care placement.
Childcare Subsidy
