Patrol Sergeant
The City of Mount Airy is accepting applications for Patrol Sergeant. An employee in this class serves as the assistant supervisor in the Patrol Division of the Police Department. As a supervisor during a shift, the employee directs the shift operations, supervises and participates in the field training of new officers, monitors and evaluates work, reviews reports and directs patrols and investigative operations, and provides back-up to officers during shift operations. Non-supervisory duties include patrolling the City during an assigned shift in a police car; preventing, detecting and investigating disturbances and crime; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; and executing related assignments. The administrative and educational role incorporates developing educational programs for interested groups concerning the activities associated with the Police Department and administration requesting the Department with the media, and assessing the environmental and sociological relations of the City and the resulting impact. This work is judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and State and Federal law, supplemented with specific directions from the superior officer. The employees, depending upon role, are subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working in both exposure to atmospheric conditions, noise, vibrations, and physical conditions. Employees are also exposed to blood borne pathogens, and may be required to work in close quarters. Work is performed under the supervision of the Patrol Lieutenant or Patrol Captain and is evaluated through observations, review of reports, and discussion concerning how particular situations are handled. The starting salary for this position is $55,400 with incentives available for General, Intermediate and Advanced Law Enforcement Certificates.

Education and Experience

Required: Possession of a high school diploma or the equivalency of; completed requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Special Requirements

Before assignment to sworn duties, employees must possess a valid driver’s license.

Must have a minimum of two years of service.
