Responsibilities:

Provide education to students with special education designations including Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impaired, and high‑functioning Autism. Create a positive learning environment where students develop skills to participate successfully in the general education classroom. Serve as case manager, encourage students to reach academic and career goals, and collaborate in general education or self‑contained classrooms.

Essential Functions

Provide direct instructional services using evidence‑based practices tailored to students’ Individual Education Programs (IEPs).

Assess student abilities relative to desired goals and objectives.

Promote positive behavior and assist in classroom behavior management.

Collaborate with general education teachers to assess program effectiveness, recommend strategies, and implement accommodations or modifications.

Participate in and chair eligibility, IEP, and triennial meetings.

Plan, integrate, and utilize assistive technology for instruction.

Communicate accommodations to essential teachers and paraprofessionals before the first day of class.

Communicate with parents regularly, responding to emails and phone calls.

Participate in staff, department, and school‑wide committees and PLCs as required.

Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals or volunteers.

Apply knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing special education services.

Perform related duties as assigned by administration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrate knowledge of instructional practices and positive behavioral supports for students with disabilities, ACPS curriculum and techniques, human development, and assessment of behavioral disorders. Provide effective behavioral support in group and individual settings, understand federal and state mandates, complete observations, and work collaboratively with administrators, staff, parents, and community members. Excellent human relations skills and written and verbal English proficiency.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.

Eligibility for a Virginia teaching license; Master’s degree preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work
Work performed primarily in school settings: classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and community areas. Requires frequent contact with students, staff, and parents; occasional contact with medical professionals. Requires standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception. Requires ability to respond to needs of students in stressful settings.
