Reading Coach Job Description (Elementary)

Description and Goals:

The Reading Coach will support all K-5 staff in the implementation of the site reading plan and program. The Coach will work directly with teachers in a school providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning. The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions.

Responsibilities:

Guide teachers to collect and analyze data and develop action plans in response to determined student needs.

Provide individualized, classroom-based support to implement comprehensive program. This will include modeling of best teaching practices.

Work with the principals within the school to create a school-wide focus on goals for reading achievement.

Oversee the school’s assessment procedure, training, data collection and collaborate with the principal to complete reports due.

Participate fully in professional development opportunities and professional research and reading.

Qualifications:

5+ years elementary classroom experience

Certification: Holds a bachelor’s degree or higher and an add-on certification for literacy coach; or holds a bachelor’s degree or higher and is enrolled and actively participating in the SCDE Literacy Leader Institute or is actively pursuing the literacy coach endorsement by enrollment in an SCDE-approved program; or holds a master’s degree or higher in reading or a closely-related field and is pursuing the required qualifications in coaching.

Deep knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development

Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills

Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share research based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice, mentoring and coaching.

Strong organizational skills.

Terms of Employment
190 days per school year; Salary based on District Scale for Teachers

Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff
