Senior Software Engineer - Compute API
Location: New York
Business Area: Engineering and CTO
Ref #: 10050371
Description & Requirements
Bloomberg’s Technology Infrastructure (TI) organization provides the compute, storage, network, and developer solutions that underpin every product our engineers build. Within TI, the Platform & API team is where infrastructure and product experience come together. We design and operate the developer-facing interface of TI’s Compute and Storage products. By making infrastructure access simple, fast, and self-serve, we enable teams to move quickly from idea to running application.
Our Team
The Compute API team is the developer-facing entry point to Bloomberg’s compute platform. We abstract the complexity of provisioning virtual and physical machines into clean, intent-driven APIs. Our work spans API design, distributed systems, and product modeling, using a stack that includes Python, Airflow, OpenStack, RESTful APIs, and relational databases. We uphold high technical standards by building declarative, deterministic systems that deliver stability and scale across Bloomberg’s infrastructure.
What’s In It For You
You’ll help shape the APIs that thousands of Bloomberg developers use every day to provision compute in a standardized, compliant way. The APIs and systems you design will power UIs, automations, analytics pipelines, and infrastructure tools across the company, directly influencing how engineers experience and interact with infrastructure.
We’ll Expect You To
Design and build distributed APIs and workflows for Bloomberg’s compute platform that turn developer intent into running infrastructure
Improve the reliability, observability, and maintainability of the platform
Collaborate with stakeholders to understand use cases, refine requirements, and enhance usability
Lead and facilitate projects, ensuring alignment, clarity, and timely delivery
Mentor junior engineers, share knowledge, and nurture technical excellence across the team
You’ll Need to Have
4+ years of experience with backend programming (e.g., Python, Go, or C++)
Strong understanding of backend systems, API design, and distributed systems fundamentals
Proven track record of delivering scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems in production
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
Comfort working in Unix-based environments
We’d Love To See
Familiarity with distributed systems best practices
Experience with relational databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL
Exposure to infrastructure platforms or virtualization technologies like OpenStack or ESX
Exposure to workflow orchestration systems (e.g., Apache Airflow)
Experience with observability, testing, or reliability tooling for backend systems
