RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COUNSELOR

Assist students in all noncredit programs, including but not limited to Adult Basic Education, GED and HiSET preparation, high school diploma, Career Technical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL).

Conduct academic counseling to assess students' immediate and long‑range goals and develop educational plans.

Assist students in interpreting program requirements in written and computerized formats.

Interpret certificate, transition‑to‑college, and associate degree requirements to support students in pursuing educational and career objectives.

Lead group counseling sessions for a variety of student populations, including new students, transition‑to‑credit students, and Career Technical Education students.

Collaborate with faculty, counselors, staff, administrators, and community partners to recruit, engage, and support students in noncredit programs, including those in off‑campus communities and across college divisions.

Assist students with the enrollment process, including testing and placement into appropriate programs and classes.

Support students with limited digital literacy in onboarding processes and procedures.

Review and evaluate prior coursework to guide students toward appropriate classes for completion of a high school diploma.

Provide group counseling sessions and teach noncredit Personal Growth classes.

Refer students to appropriate community resources.

Assist students in assessing their aptitudes, abilities, and interests and advise them on current and future employment trends.

Support students in career exploration and goal‑setting using appropriate career resources.

Assist students in addressing personal challenges that may interfere with their educational and career goals.

Participate in professional organizations and attend conferences and workshops to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge.

Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member.

Serve on college governance committees, participate in college and student services in‑service meetings, and/or other appropriate activities.

Provide outreach to prospective students and the community about the college's educational programs and student services.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or an equivalent credential.

(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed fields and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification.)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Familiarity with counseling special populations in community colleges, including noncredit students, English language learners, undocumented students, LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, and formerly incarcerated or system‑impacted students.

Bilingual proficiency in Mandarin.

Demonstrated passion for and experience in counseling and supporting adult learners across a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds and levels of academic preparation.

Knowledge of culturally sustaining practices and effective strategies for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous students who are historically underrepresented and underserved.

Use counseling and instructional methods and strategies to increase the persistence, success, and retention of college students.

Use knowledge of career development methods, techniques, and instruments to provide career counseling services.

Apply knowledge of program review and SLOs to conduct assessments and measure student success factors and disproportionate impacts.

Use telecommuting software and chat services to conduct counseling sessions.

Use appointment scheduling software to schedule counseling appointments and enter counseling notes.

Apply knowledge of counseling methods and strategies to increase the persistence, success, and retention of college students.

Use general office software and equipment to develop reports, presentations, counseling materials, aggregate data, and communicate with district staff and students.

ABILITY TO:

Ensure accuracy of notes entered.

Participate in appropriate professional organizations, attend conferences and workshops.

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge on topics regarding equity, inclusion and other issues impacting diverse student populations.

Facilitate groups and workshops that engage and motivate students.

Develop a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment for all students.

Maintain subject‑matter currency.

Adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of college students with differing learning modalities and abilities.

Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with district staff, faculty, and students.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Eleven months, 100% ‑ tenure‑track position beginning July 2026.

Thirty‑five (35) hours per week, plus five (5) hours for professional growth and development activities, college governance, and other professional responsibilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Successful completion of live‑scan clearance and TB screening.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100‑3109.

Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member.
