Surface Water Management - Streets - Parks
The City of Des Moines is recruiting for multiple Maintenance Worker I-II positions across the Surface Water Management, Streets, and Parks Divisions. These positions offer the opportunity to build a long-term career in public works while directly contributing to the safety, sustainability, and appearance of our community.
Depending on qualifications, candidates may be hired at the Maintenance Worker I (entry level) or Maintenance Worker II (journey level) classification. Maintenance Worker I employees are typically eligible for advancement to Maintenance Worker II after meeting experience and performance requirements.
These positions offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits and a 9/80 schedule allowing for every other Friday off.
Salary Ranges:
Maintenance Worker I: $5,141.76 to $6,250.46 per month DOE
Maintenance Worker II: $6,014.78 to $7,312.00 per month DOE

About the Position:
Maintenance Workers perform a wide range of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of City infrastructure, facilities, and public spaces. Employees are typically assigned to a primary division but may assist other divisions during emergencies, peak workloads, or special projects. These positions are under the general supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent and Crew Chief.
Maintenance Divisions

Surface Water Management
Surface Water Maintenance Workers focus on protecting water quality and maintaining the City\'s stormwater system, including:
Installing, repairing, and maintaining storm drainage systems, culverts, and ditches
Inspecting and maintaining approximately

4,600 catch basins

throughout the City
Responding to flooding and storm-related emergencies and pollution incidents
Streets Division
Streets Maintenance Workers ensure safe and reliable transportation infrastructure by:
Repairing potholes, sidewalks, and roadway surfaces
Performing pavement patching, crack sealing, striping, and signage installation
Supporting snow and ice operations and emergency debris response following accidents or storms
Parks Division
Parks Maintenance Workers help maintain parks, open spaces, and recreation facilities, including:
Maintaining turf, trees, landscaping, and athletic fields
Installing and repairing irrigation systems
Maintaining playgrounds, park structures, trails, and landscaped areas
Applying fertilizers and pesticides in accordance with required licensing
Classifications:
Maintenance Worker I - Entry Level
Performs routine maintenance and construction tasks under close supervision
Typically has limited related work experience and receives on-the-job training
Progression to Maintenance Worker II occurs upon meeting required experience and performance standards
Maintenance Worker II - Journey Level
Performs the full range of duties with minimal supervision
Operates commercial vehicles and specialized equipment
Provides experienced support during complex or emergency operations
Maintenance Worker I Requirements
High school diploma or GED.
Related experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of streets strongly preferred.
Vocational school or technical training in maintenance and repair or construction trade preferred.
Special Requirements
Successful completion of pre-employment background, criminal history, and driving record checks.
Possession of a good driving record, and ability to maintain throughout employment.
Possession of a valid Washington State driver\'s license;
Possession of a valid First Aid/CPR card, or obtain within three months of hire date, and ability to maintain throughout employment.
Possession of a current Washington State Department of Transportation Traffic Flagging Card or obtain within three months of hire date, and ability to maintain throughout employment;
Park Division employees must obtain a Commercial Pesticide Operator\'s License within the first year of employment; and ability to maintain throughout employment.
Maintenance Worker II Requirements
All of the above Maintenance Worker I requirements;
Four years\' equivalent work experience in Streets Maintenance, SWM and/or Parks; and
Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL).
Special Requirements
Pre-employment, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing are required for this position.
Because of the known effects of tobacco use, the City of Des Moines does not hire applicants who use tobacco products.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities
Duties require being available to work nights, weekends, standby and emergency call-ins. Work is primarily performed in an outdoor environment, which may include uneven and unstable walking surfaces, tripping hazards, moderate noise levels, adverse weather conditions, exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, chemicals, pesticides, traffic, and heavy equipment. This position requires the ability to walk, kneel, stand, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, bend, dig, hear and speak to exchange information, and occasionally push, pull, and lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Position requires driving a vehicle to conduct work.
